Have you watched these 11 ridiculous campy horror movies? (where to watch)
As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that camp horror movies are a delightful subgenre that never fails to bring a smile to my face. These films, with their outrageous premises, absurd characters, and blend of humor and terror, offer an entertaining escape from reality.
One of the best subgenres of horror in my opinion would have to be camp horror. These types of movies don’t really take themselves too seriously. They’re known for their over-the-top elements and unique blend of horror and comedy. They embrace absurdity and offer a mix of scares and laughs. Truthfully, they’re outrageous and ridiculous. But they also provide a fun and entertaining experience, and that’s what makes people love them.
Below, we shared a list of 11 must-see campy horror movies. You might’ve watched most, if not all, of the films on this list. That’s okay, though. It looks like a rewatch session may be in order for you.
Thanksgiving (2023)
Where to watch: Netflix, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
The movie “Thanksgiving” offers a fun, over-the-top take on the slasher genre. Set in a small town, the story unfolds as it gets terrorized during the Thanksgiving celebration by an enigmatic murderer wearing a pilgrim outfit. Just imagine a killer dressed as a pilgrim going on a rampage – that’s quite absurd, isn’t it? This film blends dark humor and satire to enhance its quirky and humorous tone.
Contrary to what one might expect, Thanksgiving isn’t your usual light-hearted horror flick. Instead, it carries a heavier, somber undertone, which makes it an ideal choice for viewers who appreciate a blend of serious and humorous elements in their horror movies.
M3GAN (2022)
Where to watch: Starz, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
The movie “M3GAN” features an excessive, comical plot about a high-tech, intelligent doll named M3GAN designed to be a kid’s playmate. However, as she becomes more advanced and gains self-awareness, she transforms into a lethal force.
This movie incorporates dark comedy and satire, with deliberately humorous scenes such as M3GAN breaking out into an unexpected dance routine while pursuing her target. Such moments are laughable in their absurdity. In essence, the film M3GAN embraces its own absurdity, adding a touch of camp to its implausible plot.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Where to watch: Tubi, Amazon Prime Video, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
One of the classic campy horror movies is Killer Klowns from Outer Space. You can ask any horror fan who has ever watched this movie, and they will agree. Let’s first start off with the deliberately over-the-top premise.
In a strange twist of events, there are extraterrestrials resembling clowns wreaking havoc in a tiny town with circus-themed weaponry. Frankly, that idea strikes me as rather implausible. What adds to the movie’s cheesy charm is its dark humor, limited special effects, and self-referential tone. If you haven’t caught this flick yet, I must say it’s high time you did! It offers a delightful mix of amusement, laughter, and frightening moments.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 (1986)
Where to watch: Tubi, Pluto TV, Amazon Prime Video, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
If you’ve seen the original “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” from 1974, which had a serious and intense vibe, you might have found its sequel, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2,” quite different. Unlike the first film, the sequel is known for its lighter tone, featuring elements of dark humor and a more playful, campy style.
13 years after the initial film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 focuses on a radio personality who unwittingly becomes a target of Leatherface and his cannibalistic kin. Given its over-the-top characters, comedic undertones, graphic violence, dark wit, and self-referential nature, it’s hard to deny that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 is often categorized as a campy horror production.
Gremlins (1984)
Where to watch: Available to rent or buy on digital platforms
The film “Gremlins” showcases the essence of a quirky, spooky movie. It presents a seemingly innocent furry pet known as a Mogwai that can unexpectedly transform into a naughty and menacing beast. In “Gremlins”, these malevolent creatures bring chaos to a peaceful town. This unusual plot is nothing if not campy. Fundamentally, “Gremlins” thrives on its absurdity, making it an iconic example of campy horror cinema.
