Has Star Trek: Lower Decks tied one of their characters to an all-time great villain?

As a Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vast expanse of the galaxy, I can confidently say that Jack Ransom from Lower Decks is a breath of fresh air. Jerry O’Connell brings an infectious energy to the character, creating a perfect blend of ’80s bravado and modern wit. But it seems there might be a darker side to this bundle of fun.

Jack Ransom stands out as one of the most entertaining and amusing characters across contemporary Star Trek. Jerry O’Connell portrays him flawlessly, creating a character that is lively, exaggerated, and an excellent representation of the 1980s bravery reimagined for today. He’s simply full of entertainment value.

Yet, he may share a dark secret. Much like the ties that bond La’an Noonien Singh with her psychopathic, murderous, dictator of a relative, Our own Jack Ransom may have a tie to another all-time great Star Trek villain; Rudolph Ransom.

Apart from Captain Rudolph Ransom, there was only another Starfleet captain navigating the Delta Quadrant during the USS Voyager’s journey through this region of space. Similar to the crew and vessel of the Voyager, Captain Ransom found himself drawn into the Caretaker’s array, but unlike the Voyager who persisted in exploring the unknown, Captain Ransom chose a different path, becoming malevolent. Driven by a need to survive, Ransom resorted to using a living, intelligent organism to fuel his ship.

The aliens launched attacks on his crew whenever they got the opportunity, following this event. When Captain Janeway learned about Ransom’s choice, she immediately opposed him. This confrontation ultimately led to Ransom’s demise. However, is there a familial connection between the nefarious Rudolph and the flamboyant hero Jack? ScreenRant posits a possibility, and we concur.

Apart from their names, they possess some distinctive traits. They both have similar hair and skin shades, and they resemble each other physically to a certain extent, though this is somewhat debatable. Furthermore, they both possess an energy that, when harnessed appropriately, can be extraordinarily potent; however, if left unchecked, it can lead to disastrous outcomes.

It seems quite plausible that the two men could be relatives, yet it’s unfortunate that we may never find out for sure, as the series finale likely won’t provide an answer. With only ten episodes left in Lower Decks, and the final episode airing before Christmas, the possibility of this secret being unveiled is slim at best.

In other formats beyond the last episode, such as comics, Star Trek: Lower Decks may carry on with its storyline as part of the official continuity. However, it’s unlikely that both shows will remain closely connected due to a shared family tie.

A missed opportunity for sure.
