Has Grand Tour ended, or will it continue on Prime Video?

As a dedicated fan who has followed the antics of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May since their days on Top Gear, it’s with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to The Grand Tour. This dynamic trio, along with producer Andy Wilman, have provided us with countless hours of laughter, excitement, and petrol-scented entertainment.

Amazon’s show “The Grand Tour” will conclude its current format by releasing a long finale titled “One For The Road.” This epic special finds the cranky threesome embarking on an adventure through Zimbabwe.

I can’t help but reminisce about the thrilling journey that led to the creation of “The Grand Tour” specials. It all started when Jeremy Clarkson, my favorite automotive enthusiast, parted ways with the beloved BBC show “Top Gear.” Soon after, his trusted companions Richard Hammond and James May also decided to embark on this new adventure, along with their long-time producer Andy Wilman. What a ride it’s been ever since!

At Amazon’s Prime Video, the three-person team was granted an open-ended check signed by Jeff Bezos, essentially giving them free rein to explore and enjoy their adventures within the limits of their gradually fatigued physical conditions.

Over the course of three complete seasons, the team created ‘The Grand Tour’, with a mobile studio setup, prior to shifting focus towards the much-loved special episodes that ‘Top Gear’ enthusiasts adore.

Now, the bell signifies the end of service, and the group has chosen to wrap up their involvement, as they prefer to take their leave before being asked to do so by the higher-ups in television production. This is their statement regarding their decision.

Why is The Grand Tour ending?

Wilman, one of the trio’s long-time producers, who joined their main crew during the 2002 revival of Top Gear, has discussed his choice to depart at this time.

He shared with Car Throttle: “We reached a deal with Prime Video, opting to produce only the specials because we understood that our audience cherishes grand cinematic journeys. By focusing on less, we can maintain a certain level of quality control.

It’s fortunate for us that we’ve managed to guide our own path. Now, instead of being forced out, we have the freedom to choose when to end, a privilege not many series enjoy. Often, one may wish to continue, only to hear, ‘We no longer need you.’

May remarked: “I’ve often stated that, had it come to an end at a certain moment, when it almost did, I should be thankful for the chance I had. However, it didn’t cease; instead, it continued on.

Eventually, we reached a stage where we concluded, “Enough is enough. Let’s halt now while we have a sliver of an advantage left. We wouldn’t want to continue and potentially bring dishonor upon ourselves.

Clarkson suggested that the creators of the Amazon series might be struggling to come up with fresh, thrilling stunts for the special episodes.

In an interview with The Times, he remarked, “We’ve exhausted all possibilities a car can offer. During our discussions on the next steps, everyone simply gave up, expressing their frustration by raising their arms.

Will The Grand Tour continue?

Fans of The Grand Tour may find a bit of comfort knowing that, according to Hammond, the show will continue in some form or another.

As the trio is saying goodbye, other hosts will step in, Hammond mentioned during his conversation with the Metro.

He announced that “The Grand Tour” would go on. Although we’ll no longer be hosting, Prime is taking over. I’m eagerly looking forward to reclining in my usual seat and enjoying someone else at the helm. What a fantastic continuation!

Hammond acknowledges that he’s not aware of the identities of the upcoming hosts, yet he expressed what he believes is essential for their continued success with the program.

When creating a program centered around a specific topic like cooking, dance, or automobiles, the people responsible for making it should genuinely care about and be passionate about that subject. And this has been our approach all along.

Our program appealed to both car enthusiasts and those who aren’t particularly interested in cars. However, it was crucial for us to possess an expert knowledge about cars.

The Grand Tour: One For The Road is available to stream on Prime Video.
