Harvey Weinstein hospitalized in New York with COVID-19 and double pneumonia

As a movie lover who has followed the Harvey Weinstein case closely, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing about his latest hospitalization. On one hand, it’s disheartening to see such a powerful figure in Hollywood’s history reduced to this state of health and legal limbo. On the other hand, it’s important to remember that Weinstein is facing serious allegations of sexual misconduct and assault, and his current situation does not change that.

I’ve been closely following the news about Harvey Weinstein, the renowned Hollywood film producer, and was disappointed to learn that he’s been hospitalized once more. He’s currently facing a retrial for alleged rape charges in New York.

According to New York Corrections Department documents, the 72-year-old was moved from Rikers Island jail facility to a secured unit at Bellevue Hospital.

I’ve been battling some tough health issues at Bellevue Hospital as of late. Alongside my ongoing recovery from COVID-19, I’m also dealing with double pneumonia, diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid accumulation in both my heart and lungs. My representative shared this update with the Associated Press on Thursday.

“We remain thankful to the law enforcement officials, medical personnel in the city’s prisons and hospitals, specifically Bellevue Hospital, for swiftly transferring Mr. Weinstein under the care of healthcare professionals when necessary,” Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s publicist, acknowledged, with the health updates coming from prison consultant Craig Rothfeld.

Engelmayer did not immediately respond Friday to The Times’ request for comment.

In April towards the end, Weinstein was allowed into Bellevue following the reversal of his 2020 rape conviction by a higher court.

In May, prosecutors requested a September retrial during a hearing at a Manhattan courthouse. At this hearing, Weinstein, who had used a walker in previous court appearances, was seen in a wheelchair pushed by a court officer. Defense attorney Arthur Aidala explained that Weinston was present at the hearing despite being hospitalized and undergoing unspecified health tests. (Or: In May, during a hearing at a Manhattan courthouse, prosecutors proposed setting a September retrial date. According to Aidala, there were no worries regarding his client’s cognitive capabilities; instead, he characterized Weinstein as exceptionally sharp and intellectually astute. (AP reported)

Later on, it came to light that the producer of “Shakespeare in Love” and “Pulp Fiction,” who was a patient at Bellevue, was given preferential treatment. He was then taken out of the hospital against medical advice.

I supported the ruling made by the New York state appellate court last spring, which overturned Harvey Weinstein’s initial 23-year prison sentence from 2020. The reason being, the judge who presided over his trial allowed four women as witnesses against him, although their allegations weren’t related to the case at hand and may have prejudiced the jury.

As a movie-goer, I’d put it this way: The judges made a mistake when they allowed the prosecution to question Weinstein about old, unrelated accusations if he chose to take the stand during his trial.

The outcome of Weinstein’s New York retrial depends on whether the accusers are ready to testify once more. Haley is still pondering her decision, while prosecutors affirm that Mann is willing to take the stand. This implies arranging a retrial date following Labor Day.

Weinstein is due to return to court Aug. 7, jail records said.

In 2022, the disgraced film executive was found guilty of rape charges in Los Angeles and received a sentence of 16 years in prison in California.
