Harry Styles says he became more private after leaving One Direction. He explained that during his time in the band, he felt pressured to share a lot of personal details with the public.
The 32-year-old singer first became famous at age 16 as a member of a hugely popular boyband, with Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik.
After Zayn left in 2015, the band One Direction announced they were taking a break in 2016, and each member began working on their own music.
Harry says that period really helped him understand how to handle fame. While in the group, he and his bandmates were encouraged to share their personal lives with the public, and that experience helped him determine what aspects of fame felt right for him.
Oh my gosh, he was talking about being famous on this podcast, and it was so insightful! He basically said that being in the public eye teaches you really quickly what you’re okay with sharing and what’s just… too personal. It’s like, you figure out your boundaries, you know? It’s amazing how self-aware he is!
When I first joined the band, we were definitely pushed to be really open and share a lot about ourselves with fans – to really let people in and get to know the real us, you know?
He continued, explaining that completing that project and then starting his own work helped him figure out what he was comfortable sharing and how to keep more of his personal life private.
Following Harry’s recent interview with Runner’s World, where he openly discussed how lonely fame could be, it’s clear he turned to running as a way to escape the pressures of celebrity life.
He shared that becoming incredibly famous at a young age, first with One Direction and then as a solo performer, led to him feeling increasingly alone.
Following the conclusion of his extensive 173-show Love On Tour in July 2023, Harry stepped back from music to focus on family, travel, and experiencing concerts as a fan instead of performing.
He remembered having to decline every invitation over the years – things like friends’ birthdays, exciting trips, and even special events.
I began to question whether my refusals stemmed from a genuine lack of time, or simply from a preference for avoiding commitment.
Trying to shield yourself from negative people can also prevent you from enjoying good experiences and connections.
Harry took some time off from public life to travel, experiencing events like Glastonbury, the Berlin club scene, and the announcement of the new Pope in Rome. During this time, he discovered a love for running, which he found to be a peaceful and solitary activity.
He explained that new experiences can be overwhelming because they often involve a lot of stimulation – lots of people and noise.
Running became my way of working through everything. It was truly a time for solitude. When you’re training for a marathon, especially during the long runs, you essentially go out on your own and aren’t back for hours.
There’s a strong connection between those sounds and electronic music. It creates a mesmerizing effect, almost like a repeating chant.
He also shared that running offered a welcome escape from the pressures of fame, letting him simply be himself and experience a sense of normalcy, which he described as feeling completely uninhibited and authentic.
Even though he was incredibly well-known, he explained that his busy travel schedule often prevented people from recognizing him.
He explained that the key is to keep moving and quickly change direction. He believes people who spot him are usually left wondering if it was him, because he’s already disappeared by the time they realize it.
Harry continued, explaining that being an artist – like a writer, musician, or filmmaker – often means you’re a watcher of the world. But when you become famous, the roles reverse, and you become the one being watched. It’s strange because you haven’t changed, but other people start to see you differently.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, one of the things I adore about running is how wonderfully simple it is. It strips everything back, allowing you to just be present – an observer of your surroundings and of yourself – moving through your day in a really raw, authentic way.
What I find beautiful about running is its simplicity. It’s just you, out there on your own, and all you really need is a good pair of shoes.
After a three-year break, Harry returned to performing with a concert in Manchester on Friday. The show celebrated the release of his fourth album, ‘Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.’
The popular artist will be taking his new album on tour with the ‘Together Together’ tour. He’s scheduled to perform a total of 67 shows across seven cities, with extended stays in London, Amsterdam, and New York City.
