Harry Potter’s Most Annoying Villain Never Got a Character Arc—Can the Reboot Fix Rita Skeeter?

In this franchise, I encountered several characters that were quite irritating. Many of them, such as Peeves, Dolores Umbridge, and others, were intentionally written to be annoying. They each added a unique level of frustration with their distinct forms of rudeness. However, the character that truly grinds my nerves is Rita Skeeter. It’s not because she’s more evil than someone like Umbridge, but rather because her storyline never reached a satisfactory conclusion. Granted, she faced some consequences for a year, but as soon as she was free from Hermione’s supervision, she quickly returned to her old habits.

Rita Skeeter is a journalist who advances herself by spreading false news to the public, exploiting her fame for sensational headlines and quick profits. Regardless of the harm her untruths may inflict on the subjects of her articles, she remains content as long as the newspaper sells well. Rita has displayed a vindictive streak in her work, deliberately attacking those who cross her. As such, she is a deeply annoying character within the series due to her persistent refusal to learn from her mistakes. The upcoming show may present an opportunity for change, but it’s unlikely that Rita will cease being the most hated character.

Rita Skeeter Was the Franchise’s Most Aggravating Character

Since her youth, Rita harbored ambitions of prominence. This ambition surfaced early when she endeavored to join the Slug Club, an exclusive group of students that Professor Horace Slughorn would nurture throughout the years, offering them valuable connections for their future careers in return for their patronage. Unfortunately, Rita wasn’t accepted into the club, but this rejection only served to show her knack for seizing opportunities which would propel her status later on. Regrettably, it was not her writing skills that made Rita a potential member of the Slug Club.

Rita was exceptionally intelligent and skillful in magic, as she was able to secretly master the difficult art of becoming an Animagus. This process is both lengthy, expensive, and risky, as performing it incorrectly can be harmful. However, Rita managed to carry out the required steps safely and transformed into a beetle. While this may not seem impressive at first glance, it was precisely her ordinary appearance that made her perfect for spying on others and uncovering their secrets without arousing suspicion. To maintain her cover, she had to keep her Animagus status hidden from the Ministry of Magic, an act against the law which Rita was prepared to commit if it meant achieving her objectives.

She was undeniably successful, listening in on enough confidential chats to tarnish the public reputations of numerous people. A particularly memorable incident involved her revealing Hagrid’s half-giant status, which sparked an outpouring of hate from bigoted sectors of the wizarding community towards him. Regardless of her spying activities, Rita consistently penned falsehoods about Harry and his companions, depicting Harry as a self-promoter and Hermione as someone who toys with others’ affections.

Nearly everyone, including their closest friends, were almost convinced by Rita that Harry and Hermione were truly bad individuals due to her deceitful lies. Fortunately, Hermione recognized Rita’s deception and exposed her actions. If Rita continued to write, Hermione threatened to reveal her secret ability as an animagus to the Ministry, which could lead to serious trouble for Rita. As a result, many fellow fans and I were quite disappointed that Rita didn’t seem to learn anything from this experience.

Rita Learned Absolutely Nothing in the End

For a full year, Rita adhered to the assigned period, aware that revealing her status as an animagus could lead to legal issues and media censorship, potentially ruining her beyond repair. Although writing was her lifelong passion, its absence would leave her financially strained for that entire year, with Harry observing a noticeable change in Rita’s appearance during their one encounter. However, Hermione granted Rita a temporary respite to write once more, this time truthfully, to share Harry’s perspective publicly. Naturally, Rita was furious at the prospect of writing honestly and for no compensation, but as usual, she succumbed to the pressure.

On that occasion, it can be said without exaggeration, that was the sole instance when Rita performed something beneficial for the main characters. Her actions provided Harry with crucial support, yet once the year passed, she swiftly returned to her habitual dishonesty. The sight of her jotting down notes at Dumbledore’s funeral further enraged Harry, as it probably served as inspiration for her later biography about him. This biography painted an unfavorable picture of him, making allegations that he delved into dark magic and was even partially responsible for the death of his sister Ariana, who was a squib. There are numerous indications that she resorted to unscrupulous or even illegal tactics to extract information from her interviewees. In fact, Rita seemed to worsen following her brief absence from writing.

Interestingly enough, that was one of the few occasions when something Rita wrote herself contained some degree of accuracy. The facts were indeed correct, but she failed to grasp the context and couldn’t resist exaggerating it, turning the story into an unwarranted spectacle. However, this incident did lead Harry towards a better understanding. If this is a positive aspect for Rita, I can assure you that she swiftly squandered any remaining goodwill she had post-war. She authored a biography about Harry Potter, which was largely baseless, and even went as far as spying on him and his children during the Quidditch World Cup years later, earning her a well-deserved curse from Ginny.

Rita Skeeter Was a Metaphor for Dishonest Media

Rita Skeeter embodies the unscrupulous aspect of the media, acting as a modern-day paparazzi who concocts sensational stories to capitalize on others’ misfortunes for financial gain. Her own words confirm that her profession is centered around self-promotion and profit. Rita is characterized by self-interest, vindictiveness, and disregard for the truth. For her, the story is paramount, regardless of its validity. It’s evident that throughout her lengthy career, she has likely caused immense damage to many lives, all in pursuit of her own ambition.

To put it simply, there’s something particularly frustrating about her due to her constant habit of spreading falsehoods and damaging people’s lives and reputations. Although there was a brief moment where she seemed to learn her lesson, it didn’t last long. Over the next few decades, she continued her destructive behavior, even potentially causing trouble for Harry, Ron, Hermione’s children with any gossip or scandal she could invent. She failed to learn from her experiences helping Harry and the lessons of the war against Voldemort. Her misinformation played a role in giving Voldemort an opportunity to regain his power secretly, but Rita was blind to anything beyond her own self-interest.

Perhaps the upcoming series might tackle this issue. The narrative can undergo adjustments without causing significant disruptions. It could be intriguing if Rita receives justice or even experiences a transformation, becoming regretful for her deceit. Rita’s character is intended to be detested, but I suspect she wouldn’t mind that as long as the focus of her articles remains intensely disliked.
