A new Harry Potter TV series is planned for 2027, and the original movie cast is starting to discuss the idea of a new generation taking over the roles. Katie Leung, who famously played Cho Chang in four of the films, recently shared her perspective, differing from some of her former co-stars who have talked about writing letters to the new actors.
Katrina Leung, age 38, is making a prominent comeback with a part in Season 4 of Bridgerton. When asked by The Independent if she’d write a letter to the actress cast as Cho Chang, she responded with the following:
As a film buff, I believe in letting artists find their own way, so I’d only offer advice if she specifically asked for it – I definitely wouldn’t want to presume to know better. What’s most crucial, in my opinion, is to enjoy the process and not get bogged down by negativity or anyone trying to bring her down.
Dominic McLaughlin, who is playing Harry Potter in the new production, shared that his dad once surprised him with a good luck letter from Daniel Radcliffe after he was cast. Rupert Grint also sent a similar message to Alastair Stout, the new Ron Weasley, wishing him well in the role.
Despite initially saying she wouldn’t offer advice, Leung ultimately shared her own insights from her experience during the interview. She hopes the new cast members can enjoy themselves and ignore any negativity that comes with the job, adding:
Growing up is already stressful, as we all try to discover who we are. Looking back, I was definitely insecure like most teenagers. Then, suddenly being thrust into a major movie franchise and the public eye was a lot to handle. My advice is to try and enjoy the experience and focus on doing your best work.
Cho Chang is introduced in the third Harry Potter book, Prisoner of Azkaban, as a bright and skilled Quidditch player from Ravenclaw house, and she becomes Harry’s first crush. Because the new TV adaptation will have more time than the movies, fans are hoping it will allow for deeper exploration of supporting characters like Cho, who didn’t get much focus on screen before.
I was really struck by Katie Leung’s recent comments about her experience with fame after landing the role in the Harry Potter films. She admitted she couldn’t help but seek out what people were saying about her, even though a lot of it was incredibly hurtful – filled with hateful and racist remarks. It’s a powerful reminder of the dark side of sudden celebrity, and how damaging it can be, especially for someone so young.
Katie Leung started her acting career at 18 with a role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She continued playing the same character in several more Harry Potter films, including Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Beyond that, the Scottish actress has performed in London stage productions and appeared in the TV series The Peripheral, Arcane, and The Wheel of Time.
I’m really excited to see Katie Leung join the cast of Bridgerton as Lady Araminta Gun in Season 4! Netflix is releasing the season in two parts – the first part starts streaming on January 29th, and you can catch the second part on February 26th, if you have a subscription, of course.
