Harry Potter TV Show Episode Count, Voldemort Casting, & Season 2 Plans | Report

The television series based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter books is currently being filmed, and exciting updates regarding this long-awaited reimagining are surfacing. Among them is the question of who will portray the infamous character, Voldemort.

In April 2023, it was announced that Harry Potter will be a “loyal reinterpretation” of J.K. Rowling’s novel series. Francesca Gardiner is taking on the roles of head writer and showrunner, while Mark Mylod has been appointed as its director. The production began this week, with HBO releasing a first glimpse of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, the central character often referred to as “The Boy Who Lived.

According to Redanian Intelligence, the first season’s filming for the upcoming adaptation of “The Philosopher’s Stone” is set to continue until May 2026. After a brief break, production on the second season, which will be based on J.K. Rowling’s second Harry Potter book, “The Chamber of Secrets,” is scheduled to resume in July 2026. Similar to the first season, the filming for the second season is expected to last around 10 months.

As a passionate cinephile, I was quite looking forward to binge-watching eight episodes per season for this upcoming series. However, it appears that the first two seasons will only contain six episodes each – that’s two fewer than initially announced! While there are rumors suggesting that future seasons might extend to eight episodes, nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.

Has Voldemort been cast in HBO’s Harry Potter?

The primary characters from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (known as Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S.) have been chosen for their roles, with the exception of Lord Voldemort. Rumors are circulating that an actor has been selected to portray this sinister character across several episodes in Season 1, but HBO is keeping his identity a secret until the show’s debut in 2027. They prefer to maintain confidentiality about the casting before the premiere.

In the revealed cast lineup, McLaughlin is joined by Alastair Stout portraying Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton stepping into the role of Hermione Granger, John Lithgow taking on Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu interpreting Severus Snape, and Nick Frost bringing Rubeus Hagrid to life. Additional actors expected to make regular appearances include Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, among others.

Harry Potter is slated to premiere on HBO in 2027.
