‘Harry Potter’ TV series gets magical trailer and release date

The boy who lived is back.

HBO has announced that its new “Harry Potter” series will premiere on Christmas Day on HBO Max. They also released a trailer, giving fans their first look at the reimagined Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry.

Francesca Gardiner wrote and is the executive producer of the show, which was originally planned to premiere in 2027. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes and also serve as an executive producer. Warner Bros. Discovery announced in 2023 that the series will closely follow the story of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, and Rowling herself will be an executive producer.

To reach a new generation of fans, the “Harry Potter” series is being rebooted with a fresh cast. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will be Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will take on the role of Hermione Granger.

The cast also features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Since being chosen to play Severus Snape – the role famously held by Alan Rickman – Essiedu has been subjected to racist abuse and even death threats, as he recently shared in an interview with the Sunday Times.

I remember when Noma Dumezweni was cast as Hermione in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” – it feels like yesterday, though it was almost ten years ago! Sadly, she faced a lot of really unfair and racist negativity from some people at the time, and it was truly disheartening to see. It’s something I still think about.

Hans Zimmer, along with his composer group Bleeding Fingers Music, will create the music for the series.
