Harry Potter star Tom Felton sparks social media MELTDOWN with JK Rowling remarks amid controversies
2025 saw a wave of reactions sweeping across social media as Harry Potter actor Tom Felton openly shared his thoughts about the series’ contentious author, JK Rowling, during the Tony Awards on Sunday.
37-year-old actor, known for playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011 (and set to reprise the role for the Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), chose not to criticize the person who kickstarted his career during an open interview with Variety.
When queried about whether the author’s contentious opinions influence his writing, the celebrity responded: “Not particularly, I wouldn’t say so. I’m not overly concerned.
‘What I constantly keep in mind is my good fortune of having traveled the globe. Now, here I am in New York City. There’s nothing that has unified the world quite like Potter, and she’s the one who made it happen. For this reason, I feel incredibly thankful.’
Due to the heated discussions about J.K. Rowling’s statements perceived as transphobic regarding transgender identity, Daniel Radcliffe’s comments sparked a surge of criticism and support on social media.

Many fans praised the actor.
‘It’s fortunate that someone within that organization realized the importance of not antagonizing those who support them,’ one commented, while another remarked, ‘Surprisingly, Draco appears to be the most reasonable among them.’ (In this version, I tried to maintain the original meaning and tone but made it more natural and easier to read.)
A different spectator remarked, ‘It’s amusing how Felton continued to be upbeat despite portraying a villain in a series where the main characters grew bitter and distanced from their original lives, while they did. It seems like there’s an element of divine wit at play.’
Still another chimed in, ‘What a classy response. Tom stays winning.’
Another individual praised him, commenting, “It’s great that he stood firm against the pressure, unlike those who yielded years ago. She’s a remarkable champion for women, tenacious and incredibly intelligent.
But others took issue with Felton’s support of Rowling.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself gently questioning another individual’s perspective when they commented, “Who is this person claiming Harry Potter represents the pinnacle of culture, and why should we be heeding their words?
In another instance, they wrote, ‘How can a cisgender heterosexual white man understand the struggles of my transgender peers?’

One person put it simply and straightforwardly: ‘In essence, you might want to disassociate with J.K. Rowling. The earnings from her Harry Potter books are channeled towards anti-transgender groups.’
During the chat with Variety, Felton shared his enthusiasm for the forthcoming Broadway show.
It seemed like everyone assumed that the passion for the wizarding world would gradually fade away with time. However, it appears that this isn’t the case at all.
‘What I find most thrilling is the immediacy of doing it live. After approximately nine months, we filmed the entire movie, and now, everything has been transformed into a concise, captivating narrative. It’s been reworked into an enchanting, streamlined storyline. Plus, I get to play the role of a father, which has added a fun dimension to the experience.’
14 years after the movie franchise concluded, he’s disclosed his return to the character for the stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.
In November, Tom is set to become part of the production, and he’ll perform in the series for a stretch of 19 weeks. His final performance will take place in March 2026, marking the end of his stint.
On Thursday morning, he announced the thrilling news on the Today show, expressing that being involved in the Harry Potter movies was among the most significant accolades he’s ever received in his lifetime.
Engaging with this performance holds a special significance for me, as I’ll reach the same age as Draco in the storyline while performing in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this autumn.

The play titled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was scripted by J.K. Rowling, and it unfolds 19 years following the conclusion of the initial Harry Potter series.
It follows Harry, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Draco’s kids as they head off to Hogwarts.
In a unique turn of events, Harry’s boy, Albus, and Draco’s child, Scorpius, form an unbreakable bond and embark on a series of adventures together. Unbeknownst to them, they inadvertently come close to causing catastrophic damage to the entire magical realm.
Tom commented that it feels almost dreamlike to slip back into his role, including his famous platinum blonde hairstyle, and he’s excited to delve deeper into his tale and present it to the most dedicated fanbase out there.
‘I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.’
