Filming for the first season of the new Harry Potter TV series is well underway. HBO is adapting the beloved books for television, bringing a fresh take to the story of the famous wizard.
J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, recently visited the set of the new TV series based on her work, according to Deadline. Sources say she checked on how the adaptation was coming along.
Someone at the studio playfully compared Rowling’s visit to welcoming royalty, as many high-ranking members of the HBO team made time to greet her. HBO declined to comment on the visit to Deadline when asked.
Although J.K. Rowling hasn’t publicly talked about visiting the set, she’s a producer on the new HBO series. The show has cast Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
Filming for the new Harry Potter series began in mid-July. The show will cover one book per season and aims to be a more complete adaptation, including details that weren’t in the movies. Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner, and the first season will have eight episodes.
As a big fan of Harry Potter, I’m really struggling with the new HBO series. It’s hard to enjoy it knowing J.K. Rowling has made such hurtful statements against transgender people and doesn’t support their rights. I wish Warner Bros. and HBO wouldn’t continue to support her involvement, because it feels like they’re prioritizing profit over inclusivity and respect.
Daniel Radcliffe, best known for playing the main character in the original Harry Potter films, told Good Morning America on November 18th that he recently contacted young actor Jaeden McLaughlin to offer his encouragement. He then went on to say:
I didn’t feel the need to contact whoever was cast as Harry. I do know some people involved in the production, so I wrote a letter to Dominic, and he kindly wrote back. I simply wanted to wish him well and hope he enjoys the experience even more than I did – I had a wonderful time! Seeing pictures of him and the other young actors makes me want to give them all a hug; they seem so young. It’s strange to think I was once in their position, but it’s also really heartwarming, and I hope they’re all having a fantastic time.
While HBO is set to air Harry Potter in 2027, the exact premiere date has not been revealed yet.
