Good news for fans! The new TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s popular books won’t be using a narrator.
Reports indicate that HBO has confirmed Tom Turner, a British actor, is not involved in the upcoming Harry Potter reboot. Earlier this week, a rumor spread after Redanian Intelligence noticed Turner had added Harry Potter to his resume, listing himself as a “Narrator.” While he may have recorded narration for something within the show—like a voice on a television—HBO has clarified that Turner’s voice will not be featured in the series at all, according to Deadline.
When rumors of a narrator for a potential Harry Potter series started online, fans had mixed reactions. Some found the idea odd, as narration in movies and TV is usually done by a character within the story—think of The Princess Bride, which is framed as a grandfather reading a story. It’s especially unusual for a big-budget series based on a well-known franchise like Harry Potter, which is why many fans were confused and skeptical.
Filming for the first season of the new Harry Potter series started in mid-July 2025. Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry Potter, alongside Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton as his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. McLaughlin recently shared his excitement about landing the role, saying he grew up a big Harry Potter fan and it’s always been a dream of his to play The Boy Who Lived.
The new Harry Potter series on HBO aims to be a truer adaptation of the original books. Because it’s a TV show, the creators have more time to tell the story than the movies allowed. Early pictures from the set show they’re committed to accurately recreating the 1990s world of the books, with costumes and sets reflecting that era.
Who Else Stars in Harry Potter?
Beyond the three main young actors and Richard Harris’ Hagrid, the key adult roles in the Harry Potter series have largely been filled. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will be Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu will take on Severus Snape, Luke Thallon will portray Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse will play Argus Filch, alongside other talented actors.
I’ve got some exciting casting news for the new Harry Potter series! They’ve found most of the first-year students, and the young actors already signed on are really promising. Lox Pratt will be playing Draco Malfoy, with Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, and Rory Wilmot taking on Neville Longbottom. Now, their roles might be smaller in the first season, but trust me, if you’ve read the books, you know these characters become huge as the series goes on, and these actors are setting the stage for that.
Harry Potter is slated to premiere on HBO in 2027.
