Based on recently leaked photos from the set, the new series appears to be diverging from the original movies.
Okay, so when this new *Harry Potter* TV show was first announced, a lot of fans were upset, thinking it would just be a rehash of the movies. But as filming’s progressed, people started to get excited because it seems they’re adding a lot of material that *wasn’t* in the films. And now, based on some recent set pictures, it looks like they’re really shaking things up – specifically with Voldemort’s backstory. Apparently, they’re bringing him into the story much earlier than we’ve seen before, which could be a really interesting twist!
Filming for the series began this summer, and recent scenes shot in Lustleigh, UK, depict the night Voldemort murdered Lily and James Potter and tried to kill Harry. However, his attack failed due to an ancient, powerful magic. Photos from the set show a street full of children in costumes, as the events unfolded on October 31st, Halloween night.
The movies briefly showed Voldemort killing Harry’s parents, Lily and James, and this was expanded upon in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2* with Snape’s memories. However, it appears the new TV series will explore this tragic event in greater detail, and we’ll likely see the actor playing Voldemort appear on screen earlier than in the films.
Despite a strong cast already announced for the *Harry Potter* series, some roles are still being filled. Actors like Sirius Black and Remus Lupin have been confirmed, and it appears the same actor who previously played Voldemort will return. However, Warner Bros. hasn’t officially confirmed this yet. A recent rumor suggested they are holding auditions for the part, but a scene from the set indicates Voldemort will appear on screen relatively early in the series.
Many fans have suggested Cillian Murphy, an Academy Award-winning actor, as their ideal choice to play Voldemort in the upcoming film. Matt Smith is another frequently mentioned actor that fans believe would be a good fit for the role.
Who Played Lord Voldemort So Far?
In the early *Harry Potter* movies, Lord Voldemort was played by multiple actors. Ralph Fiennes took on the role starting with *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* in 2005. Before Fiennes, Richard Bremmer portrayed Voldemort in a flashback scene depicting the murder of the Potters, though his face wasn’t shown. Ian Hart, who played Professor Quirrell, originally provided both the voice and the facial movements for Voldemort, who appeared as a parasite on the back of Quirrell’s head.
In the *Harry Potter* films, Tom Riddle as a young boy was portrayed by Christian Coulson in *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets* (2002) and by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Ralph Fiennes’ nephew, in *Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince* (2009). Looking ahead, the adult Tom Riddle is expected to be played by a single actor for the duration of the film series, which spanned ten years.
The HBO Harry Potter series is set to debut in 2027.
