How fans reacted to Nick Frost’s first look as Hagrid in Harry Potter reboot

HBO unveiled the initial photo featuring Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid for their forthcoming Harry Potter revival series.

In a nod to the legendary Robbie Coltrane, who brought Hagrid to life in the Harry Potter series, Simon Pegg steps into the shoes of this iconic character. The news spread like wildfire on social media, sparking a range of responses from enthusiastic fans. One user penned, “Though our original is unreplaceable, every Potterhead would concur that even Hagrid himself would endorse his new stand-in.” Yet, there were some who harbored reservations.

In my opinion, I’ve always been a big fan of Nick Frost, but there’s no denying that the original Hagrid, played by Robbie Coltrane, holds an unmatched charm. One commenter put it succinctly, “The OG Hagrid is still king.” Another user seemed to disagree with the new design choice, expressing their displeasure by saying, “They’ve styled Hagrid like a contestant from America’s Next Top Model, let’s wrap this up,” accompanied by an image comparison.

Filming for the upcoming show started at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., with a planned release on HBO and Max in 2027. The series is spearheaded by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (known for His Dark Materials and Killing Eve) and director Mark Mylod (Succession), who both hold key roles as executive producers along with J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.

The main characters in this series are Dominic McLaughlin portraying Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout taking on the role of Ron Weasley, and John Lithgow bringing Albus Dumbledore to life. Additionally, Janet McTeer will play Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is cast as Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson is Molly Weasley, and Johnny Flynn plays Lucius Malfoy. Luke Thallon steps into the shoes of Professor Quirinus Quirrell, while Paul Whitehouse joins as Argus Filch. Each season adapts one of J.K. Rowling’s seven Harry Potter books.
