Harry Potter Costume Designer Reveals On-Set Love Stories and Secrets!

As Harry Potter transitioned from books to movies, it significantly altered the Young Adult (YA) franchise landscape, with its ensemble cast, featuring Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, being no exception. During their time on set, growing up together, Jany Temime – who joined as the costume designer during The Prisoner of Azkaban – played a crucial role in transforming them from child actors to young adults. Rumor has it that while she was responsible for dressing the cast over the years, there were several schoolyard crushes amidst all the Hogwarts costume fittings. Now, she’s hinting at some behind-the-scenes stories that went beyond the confines of Hogwarts.

As a devoted fan, I recently had the privilege of chatting with the talented Temime, who worked on the iconic James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. In an exclusive interview with Deadline, she shared her insights about the future of 007 while also reminiscing about her time on the magical Hogwarts set.

She joined the cast for the third installment, Prisoner of Azkaban, which is now streaming with a Max subscription. During our conversation, she and director Alfonzo Cuarón agreed that Harry Potter and his classmates needed to feel more relatable to teenage audiences after spending several years as students. In her own words, they aimed to make the characters seem more grounded and realistic. It was an incredible experience working with such a talented team on both sets!

Instead of viewing Harry Potter as an adorable young boy, I dressed him casually with jeans and a sweatshirt. My intention was for him to resemble an average neighbor, so every teenager could see themselves reflected in him. This was precisely the vision director Cuarón had.

In my opinion, it seems like a well-made decision that significantly enhanced my initial viewing experience, and there’s a subtle aspect that might explain why Harry Potter enthusiasts keep revisiting these films. This detail, which I hadn’t initially considered important in the 8-part series, is now piquing my interest to rewatch the movies more carefully, specifically focusing on changes in the characters’ wardrobes beyond the previously noted updates.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that you can now stream the enchanting world of Harry Potter on Max! For just $9.99 a month, you can enjoy its Ads plan, with three subscription tiers to choose from. If you prefer, you can also opt for an annual prepayment and save up to 20%. Don’t miss out on this magical deal! View it here.

In addition, Temime shared insights about her journey working alongside the younger cast as they grew up. During this conversation, she mentioned playfully the romantic entanglements among the cast members while they played ping pong on the Harry Potter film set.

Initially, I found them as young, carefree children, but as time progressed, they blossomed into teenagers, their bond deepening into a romantic connection amidst the tangles of adolescent mysteries. As they grew older, the intrigue faded, only to be replaced by their meteoric rise to stardom.

To be honest, my Harry Potter fandom isn’t as intense as it used to be, but the child and teenager in me is thrilled by this hint of behind-the-scenes romance and drama. Since I was part of the demographic that fell in love with the books (and later movies) when they first came out, I can’t help but feel excited about the possibility of talking to Temime and getting all the details. If we scratch the surface on this topic, we could easily find ourselves immersed in another 8-part series!

Though Temime’s buzzing rumor will linger in my mind throughout today, fans have been delighted with an abundance of bonus content such as the Harry Potter reunion special. Furthermore, following the conclusion of our 2025 TV guide, there’s more excitement to come: HBO Max’s upcoming Harry Potter series!
