Harry Collett (Jace) explains why he was surprised by that House of the Dragon finale

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the complex and unpredictable world of Westeros, I can confidently say that the second season of “House of the Dragon” was nothing short of thrilling. The character development of young Jacaerys Velaryon, or Jace for short, was particularly captivating, as he grappled with his role and identity amidst the political turmoil.

In the second installment of “House of the Dragon,” Jacaerys Velaryon, often called Jace, found himself deeply involved. He is not a bastard but the legitimate son of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, despite some speculations to the contrary. While he made a brief appearance in the first season’s closing episodes, he was a consistent presence throughout season 2. In this season, Jace played a pivotal role, representing his mother and engaging in diplomatic discussions with powerful Houses. Additionally, he proposed a novel solution – scouring beyond the Targaryen family to find potential dragon riders.

In summary, Harry Collett discussed Jace’s predicament with Variety. According to Collett, Jace feels that being a bastard is his only distinction from other bastards, and his connection to the dragons reinforces this. However, the arrival of Targaryen bastards for the cause has put him in an awkward position. He fears that if they take the dragons, it could undermine his legitimacy in the eyes of others. This is particularly concerning for Jace, as he aspires to sit on the throne, but worries about being ridiculed if these newcomers are seen as more worthy due to their association with the dragons.

I think he just is constantly beating himself up about that. I feel like he knows it’s good that we have people on those unknown dragons, and that they’re going to do something. But the fact that he’s responsible and that people could possibly look down on him because of that — he’s just going to beat himself up about it. And it’s going to send his stress levels through the roof, as well as all the other stuff that he’s dealing with currently.

Instead of showing us a joint action sequence with Jace and the other dragonriders, the final episode left us hanging, implying we’ll need to wait to witness how things unfold. For the moment, Collett can only reflect on this season’s work, during which he spent more one-on-one time with Emma D’Arcy, the actress portraying Rhaenyra. ‘My conversations with Emma revolved around, “We’re in a fantasy series, yet how can we make it as genuine as possible?” We pondered on having realistic mother-and-son dialogues where Rhaenyra expresses concern, such as, “You can’t go. You’re too young.” It’s the typical 16-year-old response of, “Oh, you’re not old enough to do that,” and these authentic exchanges, beyond just being in a fantasy setting.’

Jace wants to get revenge for what happened to his little brother Luke. He wants to be more involved. He wants to be a mini Daemon, I always say, as that’s the only predominant father figure that he has had through the last few years. We wanted to make sure it just felt very real. And I’m just so glad that Jace isn’t just always in the corner leaning on his sword, and he’s actually doing something this season. It makes me feel proud of the character, because he has something to do with this whole journey — which is how it should be.

A significant portion of the storyline depicted in the show is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” though Collett may not have read the entire book cover to cover. He was anticipating a plot twist for Jace, but it didn’t materialize during this season. Proceed with caution as spoilers follow!

Harry Collett thought Jace was going to die in House of the Dragon season 2

The season 2 finale ends with Rhaenyra getting ready to send her new dragonriders out into the world to fight for her. Elsewhere, in Essos, we see Tyland Lannister secure the allegiance of the Triarchy, which sends its fleet to Westeros to try and break the blockade on King’s Landing. In Fire & Blood, these two forces clash in the Battle of the Gullet, where Rhaenyra’s dragon air force lights up the Triarchy fleet as it attacks Corlys Velaryon’s ships.

In the battle, Rhaenyra and her supporters emerge victorious; however, their victory comes at a heavy price: Jace perishes as he and his dragon Vermax are struck by one of the enemy ships. Collett had anticipated that this season would be their last, and during script readings, there was always an awkward moment when she wondered if this could be her final scene to perform in front of everyone. Yet, it wasn’t until they reached the final episode in the script reading that it came as a surprise. Excitedly, Collett approached showrunner Ryan Condal and expressed her shock, saying “I thought this was it? I thought I was gonna die!”

I said to Ryan, ‘I thought this was my time.’ And he said, ‘Mate, I would have called you!’ You get something called ‘the death call,’ so you don’t have to do it at the script read in front of everybody, which I think is very nice. So I was just stressing for no reason, but I’m so thankful that I’ve got to last a whole other season. And if I die, I die — I’m thankful to be in it anyway.

The team behind the show is now preparing for season 3, and it looks like Jace may not make it through. It’s rumored that the Battle of the Gullet, which was initially intended for the finale of season 2, has been shifted to season 3. This suggests that Jace could meet his end fairly early in the new season.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Jace’s destiny from the books, and when it unfolds, I can confidently say I am content with how it pans out. To me, it represents a noble demise, not one brought about by simple means like being stabbed or poisoned. Instead, it is a battlefield death – something that everyone dreams of or aspires to, in my opinion.
