Harrison Ford admits to the challenges of playing a character with Parkinson’s disease as he prepares for new series of Apple TV’s Shrinking amid fan concerns for his own health
As a dedicated admirer of Harrison Ford’s illustrious career spanning decades and countless iconic roles, it is both heartening and concerning to witness his latest venture playing a character with Parkinson’s disease on Apple TV+’s Shrinking.
In simple terms, Harrison Ford has shared insights on the difficulties involved in portraying a character with Parkinson’s disease while gearing up for the second season of Apple TV+’s show titled “Shrinking.
In the comedic TV show, the renowned actor, aged 82, portrays Dr. Paul Rhodes, a character serving as a guiding influence for the bereaved therapist, Jimmy Laird, played by Jason Segel.
Towards the finale of season one, it became known that Paul was battling Parkinson’s disease. In light of the upcoming airing of season two on October 16, Harrison has shared that the portrayal of his condition will not be softened or made less severe.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harrison elaborated on the growing challenges and complexities that will arise due to his character’s illness.
‘He’ll face those obstacles with the traits he possesses, as we’ve seen before. However, let’s be clear, this is a tough and complex illness, and we won’t downplay its difficulty.’

Based on the NHS definition, Parkinson’s refers to a condition where certain areas of the brain deteriorate gradually over an extended period.
Consequently, individuals may experience trembling and rigid, unyielding body movements, which could potentially strip them of their self-reliance over time.
For Paul, Jason disclosed that he would face difficulties across all areas of his existence, encompassing his newly mended bond with his daughter Meg, his romantic involvement with Julie the doctor, and his work relationships with his peers.
After fans voiced worries about Harrison’s health based on his latest appearance at Disney’s D23 Expo in August, it appears that his character’s health issues have arisen subsequently, following the awarding of the Disney Legend honor to him.
The actor was honored with an esteemed award reminiscent of a hall of fame, acknowledging his substantial achievements within Lucasfilm, a company under the umbrella of Disney.
Through his memorable performances, particularly those as Han Solo from Star Wars and the daring archaeologist Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford has solidified himself as an enduring symbol within the studio, becoming one of their most recognized characters.
At the event, he imprinted his hands into concrete, yet it seemed challenging for him to write his signature next to them, as noticed by spectators.
The incident was filmed and subsequently uploaded onto the Instagram account of Good Morning America, leading to varied responses from viewers in the comment section.

A worried spectator commented, “He doesn’t seem to be in good health,” while another offered their congratulations but expressed sadness, saying, “I’m glad for his success, but it’s painful to watch him appear so weak.
Another chimed in, ‘Is anyone else concerned one hand was more pressed than the other?’
‘Tough to see my guy getting old,’ said another.
Yet a fifth fan added, ‘Shoot he does not look well.’
At the August 11 event, as the actor stepped onto the stage to receive the award from Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, he conveyed his sincere thanks to his admirers.
‘I love the life you’ve given me,’ he told the audience, per Variety.
As a connoisseur of life’s many facets, I must express my deep admiration for the individuals I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with in our shared profession. The reality is that persistence is key in this line of work; few can sustain it for extended periods. However, what sets us apart is not just our individual pursuits, but rather our collective spirit. Regardless of our diverse backgrounds and roles, we stand united in our collaborative efforts.
He choked up as he added, ‘The stories are for you, about you, about us. To be able to work in that area is a privilege.’
