Harriet Walter transforms for Sherwood boss’ new Channel 4 drama

As a history enthusiast who has lived through the tumultuous era of Margaret Thatcher and her political battles, I am absolutely thrilled to see the upcoming Channel 4 drama, “Brian and Margaret.” The series promises to delve into the intricate relationship between Thatcher and Brian Walden, two giants of British politics who clashed in one of the most famous interviews of all time.

Channel 4 has released first-look photos of Brian and Margaret, starring Harriet Walter.

In this play penned by James Graham, the lead character Walter is portrayed as Margaret Thatcher, a past Prime Minister, while Steve Coogan plays Brian Walden – a well-known, controversial political interviewer who was once a Labour MP. This drama depicts their interactions.

As I stepped into the game world, my eyes were drawn to an uncanny resemblance – there was no mistaking it; it was Margaret Thatcher. Dressed in her iconic skirt suit and sporting that distinctive coif, she looked every bit as formidable as ever.

In many of the pictures, she can be found seated across from Coogan in a TV studio setting, subtly referencing the influential Thatcher and Walden interview that serves as the basis for the show.

1989. As Brian and Margaret sat down for what would be their final television interview, they had no idea they were on the brink of one of the most memorable political conversations in history. (The description hints at this.)

The intense 45-minute encounter sparked nationwide discussions and ignited a chain reaction leading to Margaret’s resignation. Following this incident, there was no further communication between them.

According to the book “Why is This Lying Bastard Lying to Me?: Searching for the Truth on Political TV” by Rob Burley, Brian and Margaret plan to reenact the interview in a two-part series, each lasting 60 minutes.

Next year, I’ll be tuning into Channel 4 to catch my favorite game series. BBC Studios is taking care of distributing it globally.

Brian and Margaret are films helmed by Stephen Frears, a BAFTA winner recognized for A Very English Scandal and Philomena, as well as featuring Steve Coogan in the cast.

According to writer Graham, the series delves into the “deeply intricate bond” or “complex interpersonal connection” between Walden and Thatcher.

He mentions that the story is grand, encompassing themes of love and deception, and he’s confident the viewers will find it unexpectedly captivating since he did himself.

A release date for Brian and Margaret is yet to be announced.

Brian and Margaret will air on Channel 4 in 2025.
