After a lot of anticipation, Harlan Coben’s Lazarus has premiered. Unfortunately, the show hasn’t received positive reviews from critics.
Okay, so I checked Rotten Tomatoes for Harlan Coben’s Lazarus, and honestly, it’s not looking great. Critics are giving it a really low score – only 33% right now! That’s a tough break for a horror-thriller. But hey, things can change, and maybe more reviews will come in and boost it. As of now, though, there isn’t even an audience score up there, so we’ll have to wait and see what viewers think.
I’m really intrigued by this new series! It follows a guy who starts experiencing weird things after his dad passes away. This pushes him to reopen some old, unsolved cases – including the mystery of his sister’s murder, which happened 25 years ago. It sounds like he gets pulled into a really complex web of crimes, and has to deal with disturbing visions while trying to figure out what happened to his father. Plus, it stars Bill Nighy, Alexandra Roach, and Sam Claflin, which is a fantastic cast!
Although the series had a promising idea, critics haven’t been impressed. The Guardian called it slow-moving and overly repetitive, explaining that characters constantly repeat information we’ve already witnessed, unnecessarily extending the story to fill the required six episodes. Overall, they found the show lacking in substance.
RogerEbert.com agreed, criticizing the show’s predictable storyline about inherited family secrets. The review also pointed out that plot twists and character motivations felt forced and contrived, ultimately undermining the initially intriguing supernatural elements that distinguished it from other Harlan Coben adaptations.
The Independent found the show’s mystery a bit complicated, but praised its ability to keep audiences engaged. They noted that despite being odd and sometimes ridiculous, the plot is cleverly designed to be addictive. Just when you think the central mystery is solved, a new twist appears.
Lararus Has Received Some Positive Feedback
Critics have lauded the series for its impressive scale, haunting gothic feel, and enduring quality. As Doll points out, it delivers a complete story concisely, ending on a cliffhanger that’s thought-provoking even if a sequel isn’t necessary, and lingers in the viewer’s memory long after it’s finished.
Cosmopolitan UK praised the series, describing Lazarus as a “gripping psychological horror with lots of unsettling twists.” One reviewer shared their enthusiasm for Harlan Coben’s stories and highlighted the show’s complex plot, noting it wasn’t a simple “who done it” mystery. Instead, they explained, the show features multiple murders and complicated scenarios.
Clafin noted the story offers a meaningful and emotional experience, not just for the character of Laz, but for everyone involved. He also appreciated the balance between the serious themes and the lighthearted moments, particularly in the friendship between Laz and Seth.
All six episodes of Lazarus Season 1 are streaming on Prime Video.
