Emmett J Scanlan’s series, titled “Butterfly,” has recently secured a new streaming platform for viewers in the United Kingdom.
First aired in 2018 with universal praise from critics, the ITV drama has been recently added (starting 29th August) to Prime Video in both UK and Ireland. While it can still be found on Netflix, it’s important to act quickly as the show is scheduled for removal on September 11th.
This drama series primarily revolves around the character of Maxine, a 11-year-old child portrayed by Callum Booth-Ford. As the story unfolds, Maxine gradually understands that she is actually a young girl identifying as transgender. The roles of her separated parents, Stephen and Vicky, are played by Scanlan and Anna Friel respectively. They embark on a journey of acceptance, adjusting to their daughter’s transition throughout the series.

The depiction of the show was warmly accepted by the transgender community. Ash Palmisciano, a previous star from the series Emmerdale, expressed appreciation (through Radio Times) saying: “It’s authentic, intense, heart-wrenching, captivating, and an adventure that leaves viewers with no choice but to join along.

Upon its debut, the show was met with favorable reviews by critics. They commended the “outstanding acting” and described its narrative as both moving and profound, using words like “truthful,” “beautiful,” and “powerful.” (According to The Guardian)
Sean O’Grady from The Independent praised it as an outstanding drama and a groundbreaking series on ITV. On the other hand, Gabriel Tate from The Telegraph viewed it as a thoughtful and deliberate attempt to challenge stereotypes or hasty judgments. Both critics agreed that the series was noteworthy.

A new show titled similarly, but featuring a completely different narrative, has recently been launched on Amazon Prime Video. The thrilling series named “Butterfly” centers around a former American intelligence operative, portrayed by Daniel Dae Kim, who finds himself pursued by an assassin in South Korea.
This popular show, recently making waves on streaming platforms, boasts an impressive cast that includes Piper Perabo, Park Hae-soo, Charles Parnell, Reina Hardesty, and Sung Joon.
The Emmett J Scanlan-starrer “Butterfly” is now streaming in the UK and Ireland on Amazon Prime Video, and it will be available for streaming on Netflix starting September 11th.
