Happy Valley’s James Norton compares “different type of challenge” in new ITV show
As a long-time fan of gripping dramas, I must say that James Norton’s portrayal of Pete Riley in “Playing Nice” has left me utterly captivated. His ability to breathe life into complex characters never ceases to amaze me, and this role is no exception.
Actor James Norton from Happy Valley expressed his excitement about the unique challenge his newest character presented in the upcoming ITV drama titled Playing Nice.
In the heart-wrenching tale of a baby switch, the actor portraying Tommy assumes the character of Pete Riley. This story unfolds as it reveals how the lives of two sets of parents are turned upside down upon learning that their kids, exchanged unknowingly three years ago, were not their biological offspring.
In an intimate chat with Digital Spy, I shared that I was genuinely thrilled about playing the character Pete. It wasn’t just the novelty of a fresh challenge that got me pumped, but also the intriguing discussions surrounding him, his masculinity, and his evasive nature.
He added: “He just felt really pertinent and pressing and challenging. It’s a different type of challenge, playing someone who’s much closer to yourself. It asks you to be more introspective because I’m not a ‘Miles’.”
Four years ago, during the initial stages of development, Norton originally intended to portray the villainous character of Miles. However, that role later went to James McArdle when he was cast.
He mentioned that he believed the author, JP Delaney, really liked the “Tommy-like” vibe in the character Miles.
Later on, Norton revealed that he and their group chose a different path due to his fascination with the part of Pete.
He mentioned that he’s particularly close to Pete, making one naturally wonder, “How close am I to Pete? Will I come off as confrontational? Can I measure up to Miles?” was his statement.
Pete’s mistake lies in assuming that consistently being kind, evading confrontations, and generally remaining passive will ensure everything turns out well. However, one eventually comes to understand that this approach is not effective.
“You have to sometimes play nasty in the face of nastiness.”
After witnessing James McArdle’s exceptional portrayal of Miles, Norton now finds it hard to envision any other actor taking on that role. McArdle was truly captivating in the part.
Starting at 9 pm on January 5th, “Playing Nice,” adapted from the novel by JP Delaney, will premiere on both ITV and ITVX. New episodes will follow each Monday and Sunday thereafter.
