Happy Valley boss’s phenomenal BBC drama gets exciting update after “overwhelming” response

The popular new BBC drama Riot Women, created by Sally Wainwright – the award-winning writer behind Happy Valley – has been renewed for a second season. The show, which follows five women who start a rock band as a way to express their frustrations, was first released earlier this year to positive reviews, and viewers have been eagerly awaiting news about its future.

The BBC has renewed the show for a second season, and the creator has promised even more excitement. They were thrilled with the positive reaction to the first season and are now planning to expand the story and deliver an even bigger and more emotional experience for viewers. They’re inviting everyone to come along for the ride!

I was totally hooked by the first series of Riot Women! It follows five women – a teacher, a police officer, a pub owner, a midwife, and even someone who used to shoplift – all going through menopause. What really struck me was how they all realized they had a lot to say about being ignored, underappreciated, or just not understood. It was so relatable!

What to Read Next

According to the BBC, the second season will continue the story immediately after the first season ended, showing viewers what happens to the “Riot Women” next.

The new drama by Wainwright features a strong cast of talented actresses, including Joanna Scanlan (known from Slow Horses), Rosalie Craig (Moonflower Murders), Lorraine Ashbourne (Sherwood), Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner), and Amelia Bullmore (The Jetty).

In an interview with Digital Spy before the show’s release, Sally Wainwright explained that Riot Women shares many similarities with her previous hit, Happy Valley. She noted the two shows have a lot in common.

Interestingly, Riot Women included a hidden nod to Happy Valley in one of its episodes, but it went completely unnoticed by viewers!

The new show shares a similar feel with Happy Valley, featuring a very dark storyline, but also aims to be entertaining and funny, much like I always envisioned Happy Valley. I’m hoping it reaches the same level of success; we’ll see how audiences respond.

The BBC’s new show, Riot Women, quickly became popular, attracting 5.4 million viewers in its first 28 days.

Riot Women is available on BBC iPlayer.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can find Ariana & Witches at newsstands and online for only £8.99.
