Happy Valley boss Sally Wainwright’s new BBC drama with Sherwood star gets first look
Sally Wainwright’s highly anticipated new BBC drama, Riot Women, has shared its first look.
The images offer a sneak peek of the main characters, featuring Lorraine Ashbourne (from Sherwood), Joanna Scanlan (of Slow Horses), Rosalie Craig (in Moonflower Murders), Tamsin Greig (hailing from Friday Night Dinner), and Amelia Bullmore (starring in The Jetty).
As a passionate admirer, allow me to share my thoughts about the gripping series, “Riot Women,” which unfolds in the heart of West Yorkshire. This captivating narrative is powered by strong female characters who embark on an extraordinary journey: forming their very own punk rock band. Through this process, they discover a powerful voice within themselves, one that resonates with their experiences…
The summary states: “With their hands full managing challenging careers, adult kids, intricate family issues, absent spouses, and tumultuous romantic entanglements, the band serves as a spark for transformation in their lives. This journey will lead them to reconsider all aspects of their existence.
The first-look images reveal the band in action, and introduce the characters of:
- Beth (Joanna Scanlan)
- Kitty (Rosalie Craig)
- Holly (Tamsin Greig)
- Jess (Lorraine Ashbourne)
- Yvonne (Amelia Bullmore)
In addition to the cast, Taj Atwal from “Line of Duty”, Chandeep Uppal known for “Holby City”, and Macy-Jacob Seelochan who appeared in “Shadow and Bone” have been added to the lineup as backup singers for the band.
In this latest production, Sally Wainwright, creator of “Happy Valley” and “Last Tango in Halifax,” is back to working with the BBC.
Wainwright, who is responsible for creating, writing, directing, and producing Riot Women, has expressed his enthusiasm by stating: “I’m experiencing a fresh wave of excitement about the series as we finalize it in the editing room, and I can hardly wait to unveil it to all of you!
Apart from those already mentioned, we’ve also got Anne Reid, Sue Johnston, Peter Davison (from “Doctor Who”), Claire Skinner (“Outnumbered”), Mark Bazeley, Amit Shah, Oliver Huntingdon, Kevin Doyle, and Nicholas Gleaves joining our cast.
In late 2025, the six-episode series titled “Riot Women” is scheduled for release on BBC One and BBC iPlayer within the UK, and it will also become available on BritBox in the United States and Canada.
