Handmaid’s Tale star lands next lead movie role in unique single-person horror

Actress Nina Kiri, known for her role in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” has secured her next leading part in a chilling horror film, where she is the sole character visible throughout the movie.

According to Deadline, The Undertone follows my journey as a podcaster specializing in the macabre, who finds myself relocating to my mom’s place to offer palliative care.

The situation becomes unsettling as she listens to ten mysterious audio recordings featuring a pair who are pregnant and are plagued by eerie supernatural sounds. As the host discerns patterns between these recordings and her personal life, each connection seems to push her closer towards madness.

According to the plot summary, certain characters in the movie will be heard but not physically seen, as they will be voice-acted by well-known actors. The production has confirmed that casting for these roles is underway, following the completion of filming Kiri’s scenes, which can later be supplemented with voiceovers during post-production.

In an interview, first-time feature director Ian Tuason shared his thoughts on his upcoming project, The Undertone. According to him, he aims to create a horror experience that doesn’t merely provoke fear but completely envelops you in it. He plans to achieve this by using innovative sound design techniques, making even silence as chilling as the unknown.

“Inspired by my own experience as a caregiver, the film explores how the stories we tell ourselves of fear, guilt, and isolation, can become the real horrors that haunt us.”
