Handmaid’s Tale Star Bradley Whitford Reveals Shocking Episode 5 Twist

In the gripping Season 6 of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” things are becoming increasingly complex. June is working diligently to remain safe as Mayday prepares for a rebellion against Gilead. Serena Joy appears to have discovered contentment according to the standards of New Bethlehem. On the other hand, Commander Lawrence has recently become aware that his vision for New Bethlehem, symbolizing a reformed Gilead, differs significantly from those of his fellow Commanders. Actor Bradley Whitford, portraying Commander Joseph Lawrence, has discussed the surprising revelation in Episode 5 where his character discovers that other Commanders are plotting to overthrow him: “He’s not that oblivious to think this might not happen.” In reality, he’s quite mistaken.

In Episode 5, June feels uneasy about Luke and Moira’s mission against Gilead, but she reluctantly joins them in their undercover operation at Jezebel’s, a brothel. There, they encounter Janine and vow to assist her in her escape plan. Unfortunately, they are ambushed by a Guardian, and in self-defense, they end up killing him. After disposing of the body as news of a lockdown spreads, they find themselves cornered and appeal to Commander Lawrence for help in escaping. The incident leaves Lawrence stunned and questioning his position as he had not anticipated such events: He realizes he may not be the powerful figure he once perceived himself to be.

Collider had a conversation with Whitford concerning the conflict between Collider’s character and the true feelings of Gilead’s other Commanders towards New Bethlehem. Upon learning their true opinions, Lawrence may feel frightened and embarrassed. Whitford discusses the transformation of the character from a potential leader to a deceived pawn.

I find this situation quite perplexing. When I read the script, I had to pause for a moment, thinking that such naivety about potential consequences wouldn’t be characteristic. It struck me as intriguing that it’s a persistent pattern of vanity, his ambition to gain status and implement his intellectual theories being the very foundation of Gilead. And guess what? I found myself reflecting, ‘I’ve done it again!’ These instances are common with captivating writing, where you suddenly exclaim, ‘Wow!’

In this show, I had a brief conversation with Lizzie [Elisabeth Moss] and found an opportunity to add complexity. It struck me as a difficult realization, perhaps filled with regret and shame, for him, since he seemed to have repeated his actions.

Will Commander Lawrence “Turn” for the Final Episodes of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?

At the finale of Episode 5, Lawrence appears noticeably distressed after discovering that other leaders are plotting to overthrow him. Yet, the audience was left breathless when June chose to appeal to him for assistance. Although he has aided her in prior seasons, Season 6 has revealed a more ambiguous side of Lawrence, aligning with the principles of New Bethlehem – a society that, while less extreme than Gilead, still carries some of its oppressive traits.

It seems Commander Lawrence chooses to secretly aid June and Moira by concealing them in his vehicle. Whether he intends to facilitate their escape or surrender them to the Guardians remains uncertain. This situation could potentially benefit him among the other Commanders. We’ll have to wait till next week’s episode to discover if Lawrence will show compassion and prove himself a good man, just like Nick might do as well.
