Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley responds to Paul Mescal’s Oscar snub for “extraordinary” performance

Jessie Buckley, who starred alongside Paul Mescal in Hamnet, has spoken about his lack of an Oscar nomination, describing his performance in the Chloé Zhao-directed film as exceptional.

Actress Buckley has been nominated for an Oscar for the second time, this time as Best Actress for her performance as Agnes Shakespeare. She was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film, The Lost Daughter.

Addressing Mescal’s snub, Buckley said that no part of her character in Hamnet “exists without Paul.”

Hamnet is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same title and tells the story of Agnes and William Shakespeare as they cope with the death of their son.

The movie was nominated for eight Oscars, including awards for Best Adapted Screenplay (recognizing Zhao and O’Farrell), Best Director, and Best Picture.

Mescal is far from being the only notable snub at this year’s Oscars.

Fans of the movie Wicked were upset that Wicked: For Good didn’t receive any award nominations, especially considering the first Wicked film from 2024 received ten nominations.

Park Chan-wook’s highly praised dark comedy, No Other Choice, was also not among the final five nominees for Best International Film.

Eva Victor’s film, Sorry, Baby, which was well-received at Sundance, didn’t receive nominations for Best Lead Actress or Best Original Screenplay, even though it had been nominated for awards by the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice.

Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t nominated for Best Actress for her role in Die My Love, and Amanda Seyfried was also left out for The Testament of Ann Lee. Dwayne Johnson didn’t receive a Best Actor nomination for The Smashing Machine either.
