Hamnet makes history: Chloe Zhao movie breaks record for the most BAFTA nominations for a female-directed film

Chloe Zhao’s film, Hamnet, achieved a historic milestone on Tuesday, receiving the most BAFTA nominations ever for a movie directed by a woman.

The Chinese filmmaker’s project received 11 award nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, and Best Director for 43-year-old Zhao.

The film also received nominations for Best Leading Actress (Jessie Buckley), Best Supporting Actress (Emily Watson), Best Supporting Actor (Paul Mescal), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and awards for Production Design, Costume Design, and Editing.

The nominees for Best Film are Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, and Sinners and Sentimental Value.

Hamnet is a play by Zhao based on Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, which tells the story of William Shakespeare’s family.

Okay, so I’ve marked it on my calendar – February 22nd! That’s when they’re finally announcing the winners at the EE BAFTA Film Awards! I’m setting my DVR and will definitely be streaming it on BBC One and BBC iPlayer because I absolutely need to know who wins, like, immediately!

Irish actress Jessie is continuing her successful awards season run with a recent nomination for her performance in the film. She’s already won a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award, and was previously nominated for an Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award earlier this month.

Paul, her co-star, wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, but he did receive a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He’s up against Benicio Del Toro (One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Peter Mullan (I Swear), Sean Penn (One Battle After Another), and Stellan Skarsgard (Sentimental Value).

On Tuesday, David Jonsson, a previous BAFTA Rising Star nominee, and Aimee Lou Wood revealed the nominations for the 2026 BAFTA awards.

Following its strong showing at the Academy Award nominations, the film One Battle After Another received a total of 14 nominations, with Leonardo DiCaprio, its lead actor, also receiving a nomination.

Sinners is just behind with 13 nods whilst Marty Supreme and Hamnet scored eleven each.

Both Frankenstein and Sentimental Value received eight nominations each. I Swear and Bugonia were nominated five times, while The Ballad of Wallis Island, Pillion, and F1 each received three nominations.

The nominees for the Leading Actress BAFTA award, alongside Jessie, include Rose Byrne (for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).

Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for a BAFTA award for the seventh time, and could win his second, for his leading role in the critically acclaimed film, One Battle After Another.

The actor is competing against Timothée Chalamet (for Marty Supreme), Robert Aramayo (I Swear), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) for awards in 2026.

Wunmi Mosaku, a British actress with Nigerian heritage, is a strong contender for the Supporting Actress award. She’s nominated for her role in ‘Sinners’ and will be competing against Carey Mulligan (‘The Ballad Of Wallis Island’) and Emily (‘Hamnet’).

Completing the list are Odessa A’Zion, working on Marty Supreme’s project, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another.

This year’s BAFTA Film Awards see first-time nominations for Robert Aramayo, Odessa A’zion, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Michael B. Jordan, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsgård, and Teyana Taylor, all of whom are being recognized for their performances for the very first time.

Two of the six directors nominated for Best Director are first-timers: Ryan Coogler, for his work on Sinners, and Josh Safdie, for Marty Supreme.

Ryan Coogler’s film recently received several BAFTA nominations, following a week where it earned a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

The film has surpassed the record for the most Oscar nominations, previously held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016), all of which received 14 nominations.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, “Meanwhile One Battle After Another,” which follows a former revolutionary looking for his lost daughter, has received 13 Academy Award nominations.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s film received BAFTA nominations for all four acting awards, and has two potential winners in the Supporting Actor category with nominations for both Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro.

Wes Anderson has been nominated as Director, and his film also received nominations for Adapted Screenplay, Casting, Cinematography, Editing, Original Score, Production Design, and Sound.

Besides receiving the second-highest number of BAFTA nominations, Sinners also stands out when comparing the BAFTA and Oscar nominations lists.

Despite not receiving any Oscar nominations, the movie Wicked: For Good did receive two nominations at the BAFTAs: one for costume design and another for make-up and hair.

However, the Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent also earned two nominations, which is half the number it received at the Oscars, where it was recognized in prominent categories like Best Actor and Best Picture.

The film K-pop Demon Hunters wasn’t eligible for a BAFTA award because Netflix released it online in the UK before it had a theatrical run, which violates BAFTA’s guidelines.

The nominees for the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award were announced earlier this month.

The nominees for the 2026 prize – Archie Madekwe (for Lurker), Chase Infiniti (for One Battle After Another), Miles Caton (for Sinners), Posy Sterling (for Lollipop), and Robert Aramayo (for I Swear) – were announced at a press conference held on January 14th at London’s Savoy Hotel.

As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you the nominees weren’t just picked at random! A really impressive panel of industry insiders – including fantastic actors like Joe Alwyn, Sheila Atim, and Benedict Wong, plus a whole group of other distinguished professionals – carefully selected them. It’s a testament to the quality of work being recognized, knowing it went through such a discerning group of judges.

The EE Rising Star Award is unique among the EE BAFTA Film Awards because it’s the only one decided by a public vote in Britain.

Past recipients of the Rising Star award include notable actors like David Jonsson, Mia, Emma Mackey, Kristen Stewart, Eva Green, Lashana Lynch, Letitia Wright, James McAvoy, Daniel Kaluuya, John Boyega, and Tom Hardy.

BAFTA judges reviewed 221 films, initially selecting 82 for a longlist. This list was then narrowed down to create a final shortlist.

BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip congratulated the creators of the 46 films nominated today, praising them for demonstrating the power of storytelling to captivate audiences, provide entertainment, and spark important conversations.

The films nominated this year are remarkable for their creative stories and impressive technical skill. The variety of stories, genres, and filmmaking styles is truly captivating.

I hope all of our nominees, both new and returning, enjoy this well-earned moment in the spotlight. I’m excited to welcome them all to London!

We’re thrilled to present the outstanding films and filmmakers celebrated at the 79th EE BAFTA Film Awards. As the UK’s top arts charity and academy, it’s an honor to share this event with audiences worldwide on February 22nd, via BBC, BBC iPlayer, and international broadcasts.
