  • In addition to the art on view, the institutions furthers its ground-breaking vision with ambitions to become the largest carbon-neutral museum in Europe.

In simple terms, Europe’s largest digital and immersive art museum, known as the UBS Digital Art Museum, is going to be established in Hamburg. This museum will start functioning in 2026. The opening of this museum is a significant event in Europe’s cultural history. The entire building, spanning over 6,500 square meters, will initially be transformed by the renowned Japanese art collective teamLab for its debut.

The institution is situated within HafenCity’s waterfront district, breaking away from the traditional “look, don’t touch” approach. Its debut exhibition, teamLab Borderless Hamburg, aims to provide a multi-sensory journey that challenges our perception boundaries. Featuring algorithmic sceneries and illuminated waterfalls, this exhibition represents the collective’s third permanent museum presentation, having been showcased in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Jeddah previously. However, it is uniquely the first of its kind to be presented in Europe.

Back in 2019, I found myself captivated by the Tokyo version of Borderless. That encounter ignited an idea within me – to bring this extraordinary experience to Europe. With my fellow visionary, Artistic Director Ulrich Schrauth, we embarked on a journey and managed to secure a prime location in Hamburg’s burgeoning cultural hub. UBS stepped forward as our naming sponsor and strategic partner, but the essence of our institution remains focused on artists and fostering public engagement, staying privately operated throughout.

The museum aspires to transcend just providing artistic experiences, with the UBS Digital Art Museum striving to attain the title of Europe’s most environmentally friendly museum. This goal is set to be realized via a variety of measures, including carbon offsetting programs and clear pricing for admission tickets.
