Halloween Baking Championship recap: Season 10 premiere features broken glass and bubbling sweets

As a long-time fan of baking shows and all things Halloween, I must say that the return of “Halloween Baking Championship” for its tenth season on Food Network is an absolute delight! The combination of spooky themes, creative challenges, and talented bakers always leaves me in awe.

The Halloween Baking Championship is back for its tenth series on Food Network! If you weren’t able to catch the show live last night, you can still enjoy it as it’s now available for streaming on Max.

In this season, judges Carla Hall, Zac Young, Stephanie Boswell, and host John Henson are back. The contest this time involves ten talented bakers who will create an array of sweet delights in Henson’s eerie lab. The ultimate goal is to claim the Champion title and receive a prize of $25,000.

Moving right along, let’s delve into an overview of the episode, focusing on the obstacles, sweet treats, and the first contestant to be eliminated.

Thriller Challenge: Lab Glass Desserts

In this week’s Thriller Challenge, the victor is granted full immunity for the upcoming Killer Challenge, a contest that culminates in an elimination.

In the initial Thriller Challenge for season 10, the bakers are asked to design shattered lab glass desserts by utilizing sugar glass to create both sweet and spine-tingling lab catastrophes. Each participant receives a specific laboratory item as their assignment, such as beakers, test tubes, specimen slides, and so on.

  • Aaron, Beaker: Flourless chocolate cake with cacao nib mousse and blood orange sauce
  • Carly, Test Tube: Coconut cake with raspberry cheesecake filling and lime curd
  • Hollie, Petri Dish: Pistachio and cherry cheesecake with roasted pistachio crust and white chocolate ganache
  • JL, Pipette: Molasses sandwich cookie with spiced ganache filling
  • Joel, Chemical Bottle: Chocolate fennel torte with candied kumquats and pear gelée
  • Lillian, Glass Cabinet: Chocolate peanut butter miso cookie
  • Manny, Funnel: Shortbread sandwich cookie with oozing lime curd and citrus crumble
  • Megan, Specimen Slide: Mini maple bacon bundt cakes with bacon Swiss meringue
  • Santiago, Light Bulb: Deconstructed sweet potato pie
  • Thierry, Flask: Hazelnut pear and fennel financier (a financier is a French almond cake flavored with brown butter!) with fennel white chocolate mousse and fennel and pear slime

This season’s first Thriller Challenge was won by Aaron, granting him immunity for the Killer Challenge. This means he is safe from elimination during that competition, but he still has a chance to win again, so he shouldn’t slack off or be complacent with his work.

Killer Challenge: (and Elimination)

In a thrilling debut undertaking, the contestants are tasked with crafting tantalizing desserts that resemble the lab’s effervescent sludge. They are free to create bubbles using various materials, including boba pearls, sugar bubbles, or even incorporating dry ice for impressive visual effects.

At the conclusion of the Killer Competition, a winner will emerge while another participant will be removed from the contest and placed inside the cryogenic chamber.

  • Aaron: Sweet potato, coconut, and chai tart with boba bubbles
  • Carly: Blood orange pomegranate pistachio tart with pomegranate curds and blood orange mascarpone mousse
  • Hollie: Toasted sesame chiffon cake with black tea pastry cream and boba bubbles
  • JL: Chocolate cake with hazelnut crunch and chocolate Mousse with raspberry gelée bubbles
  • Joel: Passion fruit and mango mousse with coconut lime sponge and puffed rice sesame crunch with tapioca sludge bubbles
  • Manny: Pâte sucrée (sweet, crisp, and tender pastry crust) with chocolate raspberry mousse and fresh raspberry sauce
  • Lillian: Red velvet cake filled with Brigadeiro (a popular Brazilian confection) sauce with peach praline and boba bubbles
  • Megan: Pumpkin cake with sweet potato filling and white chocolate bubbles
  • Samantha: Coconut sponge with lime curd, coconut mousse, and coconut cocktail bonbons
  • Thierry: Chocolate coconut cake with coconut cream, chocolate mousse, and isomalt bubbles

In the realm of culinary creativity, I was thrilled to witness Joel’s “toxic waste” masterpiece clinch the victory in the competition. However, it left me heartbroken to see Samantha depart, as her “toxic barrel treat” seemed a bit disorganized and lacked the essence of a true dessert on her serving platter.

Every Monday night at 9 PM Eastern Time, you can catch the latest episodes of the Halloween Baking Championship on the Food Network. Immediately following their television premiere, these episodes are also available for streaming on Max.
