Hallmark star reveals stage three cancer diagnosis and gets candid on ‘scary’ health journey

Actress Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe recently shared that she’s been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and has been thinking about her experiences with emotional wellbeing.

The 44-year-old actress, famous for her role in the Hallmark series *Signed, Sealed, Delivered*, recently shared a personal story about her health in an essay for People magazine.

I’ve been a fan of Taylor Lowe for years! It’s fascinating to look back at the start of her career. Before she became a Hallmark favorite, she actually did some really fun horror films – I remember being surprised to learn she was in ‘Final Destination 3’ and even ‘Black Christmas’! It just shows her range as an actress.

The Canadian actress revealed she’s had a complicated relationship with her body throughout her life, starting when she began modeling for magazines like Maxim.

The mother of two confessed she’ll continue to look at the mirror, the same one that initially sparked her struggles with her health.

In February, Lowe shared that she discovered a large lump in her right breast while getting ready one day.

At first, she thought it was just a workout injury and didn’t worry too much, but she decided to get it checked out by a doctor anyway.

But after undergoing both a mammogram and ultrasound, nothing was found.

The mass in her right breast never went away and would eventually move as well as alter in size.

I wasn’t experiencing any pain, but I noticed my nipple started turning inward, so I went back to see my doctor. That’s when things got serious – they discovered a mass that was quite large, about 10 centimeters. This time, my doctor wasn’t taking any chances and immediately scheduled me for a biopsy, without even waiting for the results of any initial tests.

The actress learned just days after her tests that she had a type of breast cancer called invasive ductal carcinoma.

Lowe was deeply upset by the news, remembering how she immediately burst into tears after hanging up the phone and curled up in a ball.

Her husband was understanding and let her have time to herself, and their child, dressed as Spider-Man, soon came to her side. She realized how much comfort her kids could bring, saying they truly were the best way to feel better.

Initially, the actress thought her cancer was at stage two. However, in August, she learned it was actually stage three Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.

Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most frequent type of breast cancer. It happens when cancer cells grow beyond the milk ducts and into other parts of the breast, according to BreastCancer.org.

Ductal cancer originates in the milk ducts, while carcinoma is a general term for cancer that starts in the skin or the tissues lining organs, including the breast.

Lowe said she’d always been healthy, so receiving a cancer diagnosis was incredibly difficult to process.

She explained that she turned to social media hoping to connect with other women who shared her experiences, and that’s why she also wrote an essay for People magazine about her wellness journey.

Learning from other people’s experiences – especially their helpful advice, like requesting ice chips or a saline bag during chemotherapy – has been incredibly beneficial.

Lowe also expressed gratitude for her ‘Hallmark family,’ saying they fully supported her and assured her they would always be there for her.

She also mentioned that while Hollywood sometimes gets criticized, working with supportive and caring people can make all the difference.

The actress has begun chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor and is prioritizing a healthy diet to support her recovery.

This experience has been frightening, unusual, and deeply grounding. It’s changed me in unexpected ways – challenging me physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Despite everything, Lowe vowed to keep going, to find something positive even in difficult situations, and to keep learning and improving. He said that’s what he’s focused on each day.

On Friday, she posted a video to Instagram sharing her diagnosis and urging her followers to get themselves checked.

‘This is the beginning, not the end,’ Lowe expressed. ‘And the roller coaster has just started.’

The actress started her career in the late 1990s with a small part in an episode of the TV show *Stargate SG-1* in 1997.

She became known for her roles in several popular horror films, including Children of the Corn: Revelation, Final Destination 3, Black Christmas, and Wrong Turn 2: Dead End.

I first discovered her talent when she played Rita Haywith in the Hallmark series, *Signed, Sealed, Delivered* back in 2013. I was immediately hooked, and I’ve been thrilled to see that show grow into a whole series of wonderful TV movies!

I was so thrilled to revisit my role as Rita earlier this year in ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered: To The Moon And Back’! It was a lovely experience stepping back into those shoes.

In addition to acting, Lowe has also directed several projects, including the 2024 film *This Time Each Year* and the upcoming 2025 film *Eat, Pray, Lie*.
