Winning a coveted Oscar doesn’t automatically guarantee a steady stream of leading movie roles. Halle Berry experienced this firsthand in 2002, after winning Best Actress for her role as Leticia Musgrove in the film Monster’s Ball. She beat out strong competition that year, including Judi Dench (Iris), Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge!), Sissy Spacek (In the Bedroom), and Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones’s Diary). Monster’s Ball itself was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
Almost twenty-five years after her Oscar win, Halle Berry has been thinking about her career since then. In an interview with The Cut, she said that while she expected the historic win – she was the first Black woman to receive the Best Actress award – didn’t actually change much. She’d imagined directors would be lining up to work with her, but that didn’t happen.
When I won, I expected a flood of scripts to arrive, but that didn’t happen. Despite being incredibly proud, I quickly realized winning hadn’t changed how people saw me. Directors still questioned how casting a Black woman would affect their stories, worrying it would label the entire project as ‘Black’ and hurt its international appeal. They’d even ask if they’d then need to cast a Black male lead, reinforcing that perception.
The list of Black actresses who’ve won Best Supporting Actress Oscars is equally impressive, totaling ten incredibly talented women: Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Mo’Nique, Octavia Spencer, Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis, Regina King, Ariana DeBose, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. However, since winning their Oscars, only Nyong’o and Davis have consistently landed leading roles in multiple films (including A Quiet Place: Day One, Us, Widows, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and The Woman King). Hopefully, this year’s nominees, Teyana Taylor and Wunmi Mosaku, will change this pattern.
Halle Berry’s Lukewarm Journey Post-Oscar

Lionsgate
Before her breakthrough role in Monster’s Ball, Halle Berry had one major mainstream success: playing the weather-controlling mutant Storm in 2000’s X-Men. Since then, her career has had its ups and downs, with some big flops, a few sequels, and her memorable appearance as a ‘Bond Girl’.
Halle Berry starred as Jinx Johnson alongside Pierce Brosnan in the 2002 James Bond film, Die Another Day, and then hosted Saturday Night Live in 2003 with Britney Spears as the musical guest. Over the next ten years, she revisited her role as Storm in several X-Men movies, including X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Halle Berry also starred in the poorly received supernatural thriller Gothika, alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Penélope Cruz. However, her biggest career setback was likely the 2004 DC film Catwoman, which was inspired by the comic book character but lacked a strong story and, surprisingly, any connection to Batman or Gotham City. The movie was critically panned and won four Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Director, Actress, and Screenplay. Even one of the writers, John Rogers, openly admitted feeling embarrassed by the film.

I’m a big fan, and honestly, Keanu Reeves has so much to be proud of! He’s given us amazing movies like John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and the mind-bending Cloud Atlas, plus the fun disaster flick Moonfall. And it’s not just movies – he’s even popped up in The Simpsons and Sesame Street! He’s got a new film out this month, Crime 101, and I’m excited to see what he does next.
