Halle Berry Switches Out Risqué Met Gala Dress for Cannes Opening Ceremony

On Tuesday night, Halle Berry gracefully stood out in a chic black-and-white striped dress during the opening event of the Cannes Film Festival.

After the actress known for playing Catwoman, who is 56 years old, disclosed that she had to unexpectedly switch her chosen dress because of the stringent new regulations at the event prohibiting revealing dresses.

The actress often captivates with her striking appearance, and she recently dared to wear a revealing gown without undergarments at the Met Gala just a few days ago.

As the festivities unfolded this year, I found myself faced with a conundrum: my carefully chosen ensemble, complete with a lengthy train, clashed with the festival’s recently instituted regulations.

During the weekend, organizers of Cannes announced tougher rules aimed at curbing the celebrities’ tendency towards revealing “transparent gowns” – outfits that expose a significant amount rather than hide it – on the red carpet.

At the initial press gathering for the festival, Halle expressed: ‘Tonight, I was planning to don a stunning gown designed by Gupta, but unfortunately, its voluminous train proves too large for me to wear.’

Absolutely, I will adhere to the guidelines, so I needed to adjust my approach. Regarding the bareness aspect, I believe it could be another wise decision as well.

Halle appeared radiant at the dazzling occasion, serving as a juror, donning her stylish replacement striped dress.

This long, sleeve-less garment resembles a dress, yet it sports an unusual design. At the front, it boasts a high collar, while at the back, there’s a short cape attached. Beneath this outer layer, you’ll find a delicate pink netting.

The actress styled her messy brown hair into relaxed curls and boosted her stature with tall black heels, adding extra height.

Instead of choosing a radiant makeup look, she went with a brightly colored palette and seemed cheerful as she entered the event alongside the fellow jury members.

Last week at the Met Gala 2025, Halle stunned fans by appearing on the red carpet without any undergarments, showcasing her boldest outfit to date.

The Academy Award-winning actress donned a revealing, sequined black-and-transparent LaQuan Smith dress featuring horizontal stripes, though her choice to forego undergarments potentially exposed her to an embarrassing wardrobe incident whenever she shifted positions.

In a bold outfit, parts of her waistline and lower torso were visible, paired with a short, black jacket featuring prominent shoulder pads.

Now, sticking to the nudity crackdown at Cannes, Halle opted for a much more modest display.

In recent times, it seems that the glamorous event on the Croisette has garnered more focus on the stylish attire of its famous attendees rather than the lineup of movies being shown.

Instead, This year’s festival has introduced stricter clothing guidelines, supposedly in the name of modesty.

Based on the event organizers’ statement, the strict policy is intended to discourage the fashionable tendency of celebrities wearing revealing ‘naked dresses’ – which show much more than they cover up – on the red carpet.

According to a Cannes Festival guideline, it’s important to note that exposure of bare bodies is not allowed on the red carpet or any other part of the festival for reasons of decency.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “At our festive event, I’ll ensure that only those who adhere to the established guidelines are granted access to the red carpet.

A fresh set of unexpected policies has been introduced in the latest festival attendee guidebook, which also includes guidelines for appropriate public conduct during events.

Visitors should gather at the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière as we’re set to host some of the most prestigious film screenings during a busy two-week period in Cannes.

It’s clear that the renowned location has shifted towards a more traditional dressing style. Instead of attention-grabbing outfits, people are encouraged to wear formal attire like suits, tuxedos, and long evening gowns.

In addition to classic little black dresses, cocktail attire such as pantsuits, fancy blouses, and stylish sandals (either with heels or flats) are all acceptable options.

As a committed adherent, embarking on enforcing a stricter policy is uncharted territory for me. It’s uncertain if the cautious French television broadcasters, apprehensive about broadcasting nudity, had any influence in this new direction.

Significant high-profile events such as the Cannes Film Festival are broadcast on French television by France Television.

Lately, the annual event has been drawing more models and social media personalities than actors and movie creators. This shift has led to a rise in bold, revealing fashion choices on the red carpet.

In the year 2021, renowned American model Bella Hadid showcased her decolletage in a deep-neckline black dress at a viewing of the film, Three Floors.

Three years on, she repeated a daring move, leaving the attendees of the 2024 gala tongue-tied when she gracefully showed up at the premiere of the Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” in an almost transparent brown evening gown, without a bra.
