2021’s Met Gala theme was “Superbly Tailored: Black Fashion,” and the suggested attire was “Custom-Tailored for Each Individual.

Smith shared with Vogue that his creation embodies the theme’s idea of self-expression and courageously expressing oneself through personal style.

Additionally, he pointed out that the design elements of the dress reflect the theme’s philosophy, featuring dramatic lines, opulent materials, and striking audacity.

LaQuan described the overall look as ‘a mix of sexy-Bond-girl meets Harlem Renaissance.’

He emphasized the importance of working alongside Halle, as he mentioned to Vogue, “She is absolutely self-aware and possesses an impeccable sense of style, yet she’s exceptionally open to collaboration. In our fitting sessions, she wasn’t merely slipping into a piece of clothing—she was sculpting it with me.

He remembered that she advocated specific adjustments to improve her fluidity, and together they experimented with transparent sections to achieve a harmonious blend of refinement and boldness. Her suggestions were consistently deliberate, stemming from her desire to experience the piece emotionally rather than merely aesthetically.

The designer, who was responsible for dressing Ciara on that special day, shared with People that he has consistently found inspiration in the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance and this lively jazz period.

In my designs, I consistently blend sharp tailoring with broad shoulders, a style I’ve long been passionate about. The ’80s aesthetic and the boldness of Josephine Baker are also significant influences for me. So, I believe that the spirit of these elements will be evident in the design.

This year’s gala theme originated from the Spring exhibition at the Costume Institute, which showcased the theme of Black dandyism.

At this high-profile event, the hosts were none other than actor Colman Domingo, race car driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, musician and Louis Vuitton’s creative director Pharrell Williams. LeBron James is also set to attend, taking on the role of honorary co-chair.

Around 600 were expected, with athletes Simone Biles and Sha’Carri Richardson among them.
