Halle Berry Opens Up About Perimenopause Struggles

In a candid conversation, Halle Berry and Drew Barrymore discussed an experience shared by many women: the transition into menopause, specifically its precursor stage known as perimenopause.

When the actress who plays Catwoman, now aged 58, encountered her partner Van Hunt at age 54, she found herself enveloped in a romantic bubble, where everything seemed wonderful.

One morning, the pain was so intense as she tried to urinate that it took her nearly 10 minutes to completely empty her bladder.

She went right to the doctor who told her, ‘It’s a really bad case of herpes.’

After that, the star and Hunt began a back-and-forth, attempting to determine which party had passed on the herpes infection to her.

Until a few hours later when her doctor called and told her she didn’t have herpes.

She asked him what was wrong with her and he said, ‘I don’t know.’

It sparked an idea in her mind. At the age of 54, she realized she was likely well into what many women refer to as “The Change” or menopause.

However, she found out that for certain women, perimenopause (the phase preceding menopause) might extend over a span of ten years and could begin as late as the mid-thirties.

She called what she was going through ‘dry vagina.’

Halle shared that she faced difficulties in resuming intimate moments due to dryness, which had become challenging for a while.

Drew responded: ‘If I may give a description it feels like sandpaper.’

Halle abruptly chimed in, saying, “Sharp razor blades.” To which, Drew replied, “That comes with a big psychological challenge as well. I’d rather avoid that ordeal.

Drew continued by explaining that such issues also impact the partners of women, noting that they may not fully understand what their significant other is experiencing, which could potentially create a vast divide within the relationship.

Drew stated, “To ensure it becomes harmless, we require more caring, more dialogue, and more focus on it.

Men should strive to grasp the situation too, while us women muster the bravery to discuss these matters with our partners. Interestingly, it seems many men desire to offer their support.

‘But it takes us to be brave enough to invite them into the conversation.’

The Academy Award winning actress’ experience led her to start the company Respin.

As a seasoned lifestyle expert, I’m excited to share my insights about Respin – a revolutionary platform dedicated to Halle’s menopause and women’s healthcare. Our mission is to transform the discourse surrounding menopause and perimenopause, giving it a fresh perspective – a re-spin, if you will.

Initially, she introduced Respin in the year 2020 as a general wellness platform, yet she’s since revamped its branding to specifically focus on women’s health and lifespan.

‘Menopause and perimenopause may be the entry point for women,’ Berry told Fortune.

The purpose of Respin is to assist women in maintaining optimal health across all stages of their lifespan.

Respin’s subscriber-driven platform connects coaches and healthcare professionals specializing in managing menopause symptoms, along with a supportive network of women, providing a space for mutual assistance.

At Respin, we’re wholeheartedly accepting the most significant transformation yet – menopause.

We are creating something I wished was available: a helpful guide designed for women navigating menopause, those approaching it, or preparing for its arrival.

Let’s address an issue that affects more than half our global community: menopause. Unfortunately, many women encounter feelings of embarrassment, negative stereotypes, and insufficient medical attention related to this natural phase. But not anymore – let us break free from these constraints starting today!
