Hairy Biker Si King admits he still expects Dave Myers to call him - and reveals he started mourning his close friend before he lost his battle with cancer aged 66

As a devoted fan and ardent admirer of the Hairy Bikers duo, I can’t help but feel the profound sorrow that Si King is experiencing after losing his cherished friend and partner-in-crime, Dave Myers. Their camaraderie was not just confined to the screen; it transcended into a beautiful friendship that spanned over three decades.

Next month marks a whole year since Hairy Biker Dave Myers fought and lost his battle against cancer. Yet, despite this, his good friend and long-term partner in adventures, Si King, continues to anticipate that Dave will just casually stroll back into the room.

On February 28, at the age of 66, Myers, who became widely recognized through his TV cooking programs and travels alongside King, unfortunately passed away, having been diagnosed with cancer two years prior.

Meanwhile, the remaining costar, who is now 58 years old and has been friends with Myers since 1992, confesses that he sometimes tricks himself into thinking he’s still alive.

On the episode of This Morning that aired on Wednesday, he shared: ‘The grieving process actually began quite some time ago for me when Dave was diagnosed – a rather large diagnosis. It was then that the battle mentality kicked in, and we focused primarily on the fight.’

Grieving is a highly personal experience as it involves emotionally adapting to loss and dealing with things that can no longer be touched or felt physically. This aspect can sometimes be hard to grasp.

‘The amount of times I’ve thought, “I’ve not heard from that toerag for ages…” and then I go “Oh man…” so it’s raw for anybody that loses somebody, but there are two things that are certain in life – you begin it, and you end it.

The central part focuses on how to use it. Dave adored his life; he lived it to its maximum potential and was a delight to be near him.

In my own words, during an individual segment on The One Show, I shared how the essence of our bond shall endure as I navigate through this period of grief and find ways to move forward in life.

Before he passed away, the duo started working on their new book titled “The Hairy Bikers: Our Family Favorites”. Afterward, Si finished it as a tribute to him.

Dave died at the age of 66 in February, having fought a prolonged struggle against an undisclosed type of cancer, and was accompanied to the end by his fellow actor.

Speaking on the programme he said: ‘It’s the book that Dave and I started before he passed.

I deeply desired to complete it as a tribute to him. These recipes, which have remained with us over the years, hold special significance for us.

Even though Dave has moved past this, that doesn’t mean your friendship has to end. Our bond, in essence, remains the same.

I’ve had quite a setback, but I’m managing alright, thanks for asking. It’s a significant shift, no doubt. Yet, I believe Dave would want me to keep moving forward.

For over two decades, King and Myers collaborated extensively, producing numerous popular cooking television programs, writing books, and making joint live appearances.

He stated, ‘I aim to preserve the heritage we created, as I believe it merits the regard that Dave and I invested in it.’

‘There will be some pastures new that will come my way I’m sure.’
