Hailey Upton’s Stunning Wedding Dress Design Revealed: A Chicago PD Exclusive!

Detectives Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton got married on the show Chicago PD, opting for a simple courthouse wedding. However, if a more formal event had been chosen, the costume department had ideas for Hailey’s dress. Neither Upton nor Halstead appeared in the cast of Chicago PD season 12, but their characters remain cherished by fans following their departures. If either Jesse Lee Soffer or Tracy Spiridakos were to return for a guest appearance in Chicago PD season 13, they would likely be warmly received.

During this interval, although it might not be one of the most intriguing enigmas in Chicago PD, an engaging tidbit about Upton and Halstead’s wedding in Chicago PD season 9 has emerged. This revelation comes from costume designer Susan Kaufmann who shared that she had an intention to dress Upton in a non-conventional bridal attire that would break away from traditional feminine fashion norms. In conversation with TVInsider’s partner site Swooon, Kaufmann elaborated on this idea.

I wanted to [put Upton in a wedding dress], but no, it was never even an option.

It’s likely that her style would have been unconventional, given how I dressed her with an edgy, slightly grungy vibe. She has a stunning physique and is breathtakingly beautiful. So, I believe it would have been a look that was less traditional but still retained a feminine touch.

In the Chicago PD season 12 finale, when Kim Burgess was briefly shown getting married to Adam Ruzek, her wedding dress stood in stark contrast to what actor Marina Squerciati wore. The gown worn by Burgess was much more traditional, as Kaufmann described it as “simple, beautiful, and believable.

In a delightful twist of my own words, let me express my admiration: “Her aesthetic is both trendy and elegantly understated. I yearn for an ensemble that accentuates her beauty effortlessly, yet leaves an undeniable impact without being overly ostentatious.

What Hailey Upton’s Dress Would Have Meant For Chicago PD

It Would Have Been More Difficult To Justify

Initially, Kaufmann’s remarks hint that the possibility of Upton wearing a wedding dress on Chicago PD was highly unlikely. If it was ever considered, it appears it was removed from the script before reaching the wardrobe department. While it could have been fitting for Burgess and Ruzek’s Chicago PD wedding, the truth is that a traditional wedding with numerous guests simply didn’t align with Hailey and Jay’s storyline in season 9. Given Upton’s role in a suspect’s death being probed by the FBI, the focus on the investigation took priority over organizing an extravagant ceremony.

In a different scenario, it appears that Halstead and Upton could’ve postponed their grand event until the air had cleared, but such a delay might have resulted in their marriage never taking place. After three episodes into the subsequent season, Soffer departed from the series, and Upton filed for divorce from Halstead in the premiere of season 11 following stern counsel from Voight. The long-distance relationship between them during Halstead’s deployment to Bolivia wasn’t one of Chicago PD’s most successful. Given Soffer’s departure, there would have been no compelling reason for Jay and Hailey to tie the knot.

Our Take On Hailey Upton’s Wedding Dress In Chicago PD

All Sides Of The Creative Team Are Working In Tandem

The wedding of Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek was shorter than some viewers may have anticipated, but Kaufmann’s remarks underscore the extensive effort that went into the event. She clarifies that both Kim and Hailey’s dresses were influenced by their characters in the story as well as the portrayal of these characters by the actors on Chicago PD. Upton’s dress might just be a concept, but it still offers a charming confirmation that the art department is collaborating closely with the writers and producers to ensure consistency in the characters. This collaboration means much more to fans of the series than a solitary unrealized costume design.
