Gypsy-Rose Blanchard faced criticism over the weekend for a TikTok video she made with Natalie Reynolds. Many people found the video insensitive because it seemed to joke about the tragic murder of Gypsy-Rose’s mother, Clauddine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard.
During a recent social media trend called ‘We listen and we don’t judge’ last Saturday, a 34-year-old man who was formerly incarcerated revealed a deeply disturbing experience: he was imprisoned for eight and a half years after causing the death of his own mother.
After the young woman exclaimed ‘Oh my god,’ Blanchard quickly responded, ‘We’re here to listen without judging.’
A video by Reynolds quickly became popular, racking up 12.5 million views on TikTok. Many viewers were shocked, including user @brentsenff, whose comment – ‘We listen and we call a judge’ – received 209,000 likes.
Just two years ago, the Life After Lock Up star was freed from Chillicothe Correctional Center. She had spent eight years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder – she killed her mother, who was abusive, when she was 48 years old. Her sentence was for ten years.
In 2015, Blanchard provided her former online boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, with duct tape, gloves, and a knife. Godejohn, who has an IQ of 82, used these items to stab Dee Dee 17 times in the back while she was sleeping.
After plotting together, the couple stole $4,400 from the victim’s mother. They then sent the murder weapon to the 36-year-old victim’s home in Wisconsin before escaping on a bus.
Godejohn is in prison for life without the possibility of parole at Potosi Correctional Center in Missouri. He’s also serving an extra 25 years for a charge related to using a weapon during the crime.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s mother, Dee Dee, was accused of having Munchausen syndrome by proxy, leading to her daughter being falsely presented as ill. This tragic case was the basis for two 2019 productions: the eight-part Hulu series The Act, and the Lifetime movie Love You to Death.
Blanchard told TMZ on Monday that they sincerely apologize if the TikTok video offended anyone, explaining that causing offense was never their goal.
I want to clarify that I wasn’t making light of the situation. I don’t believe it’s appropriate to joke about difficult experiences from my past, and I apologize if my attempt to share that came across wrong. I’m trying to be genuine and show how I’ve grown from past mistakes, even if those mistakes were serious.
That’s my perspective, but I’d never make light of my experiences. I’m sorry if what I said seemed harsh.
The new podcaster explained that this was their first time directly trying something new. Sadly, it didn’t go as planned.
However, later that day on TikTok, Blanchard seemed much less sorry, stating that they’d all created something fantastic together and that people had simply misinterpreted their intentions.
The vlogger responded to a fan, explaining that some people are bothered simply by her existence.
Should Gypsy-Rose use her criminal past for online fame, or should some topics stay off-limits?

Two months ago, Into the Weeds obtained more than 100 previously unreleased and unsettling video calls between Blanchard and Godejohn by submitting a public records request.
In a 2015 interview, while speaking as her character Demona, the Louisiana-born actress explained that if she had a son, she and her family would keep him shielded from public knowledge to protect their privacy.
It’s crucial no one finds out you’re a vampire. We need to protect those who know and teach them how to be discreet – what to avoid saying and why keeping this secret is so important.
I believe that if we have a daughter, she will need to have sexual relations with you, as you would be the head of the family. I anticipate needing to discuss this with her when she gets older, likely around the time she becomes a teenager. I wouldn’t bring it up when she’s very young, like seven, but around thirteen seems like an appropriate age to have that conversation.
Lifetime canceled Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up after it ran for two seasons last August.

Personally, Blanchard and her fiancé, Ken Urker, are delighted to have a 14-month-old daughter named Aurora Raina Urker.
In March 2024, she secretly began dating her on-again, off-again boyfriend, a 33-year-old bartender, leading to the end of her 20-month marriage to Ryan Scott Anderson.
