Gypsy-Rose Blanchard faced significant criticism this weekend for a TikTok video she made with Natalie Reynolds. Many found the video insensitive because it seemed to joke about the tragic murder of Gypsy-Rose’s mother, Clauddine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard.
During a recent social media trend called ‘We listen and we don’t judge,’ a 34-year-old man who was formerly incarcerated revealed a deeply tragic story. He stated that he served eight and a half years in prison for unintentionally causing the death of his mother.
After the young woman exclaimed, ‘Oh my god,’ Blanchard quickly responded, ‘We’re here to listen without judging.’
A video by Reynolds quickly became popular, racking up 12.5 million views, largely from shocked TikTok users. One user, @brentsenff, gained 209,000 likes for their comment: ‘We listen and we call a judge.’
Just two years ago, the Life After Lock Up star was freed from Chillicothe Correctional Center. She had spent eight years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder. At age 48, she had killed her mother in self-defense after years of abuse.
In 2015, Blanchard provided her former online boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, with duct tape, gloves, and a knife. Godejohn, who has an IQ of 82, used these items to stab Dee Dee seventeen times in the back while she was sleeping.
After plotting together, the couple stole $4,400 from the woman’s mother. They then sent the murder weapon to the home of the 36-year-old victim, who had autism, in Wisconsin, before escaping on a bus.
Godejohn is imprisoned for life without the possibility of parole at the Potosi Correctional Center in Missouri. He is also serving an additional 25-year sentence for a related armed crime.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s mother, Dee Dee, was accused of having Munchausen syndrome by proxy, leading her to falsely claim Gypsy was ill. This tragic case inspired two 2019 productions: the eight-part Hulu series The Act and the Lifetime movie Love You to Death.
Blanchard told TMZ on Monday that they sincerely apologize if the TikTok video offended anyone, explaining that causing offense was never their goal.
I want to clarify that I wasn’t making light of the situation. I don’t think it’s appropriate to joke about difficult experiences from my past, and I’m sorry if my previous comments came across that way. I’m simply trying to be genuine and share that despite past mistakes, I’ve grown and moved forward.
That’s my perspective, but I’d never make light of my experiences. I’m sorry if what I said seemed harsh.
The new podcaster explained that this was their first time directly trying something new. Sadly, it didn’t go as planned.
However, later that day on TikTok, Blanchard seemed much less sorry, stating that they had created something wonderful together and that people had simply misinterpreted their intentions.
The vlogger responded to a fan, explaining that some people are bothered simply by her existence, and they try to find fault with everything she does.
Just two months ago, Into the Weeds obtained more than 100 previously unreleased and unsettling video calls between Blanchard and Godejohn by submitting a public records request.
Back in 2015, while playing the character Demona, the Louisiana-born performer explained that if she had a son, she and her family would keep him shielded from public knowledge, wanting to protect their privacy and their children from outside attention.
It’s crucial no one discovers you’re a vampire. We need to protect those who know and teach them how to avoid accidentally revealing your secret, emphasizing just how important it is to stay silent.
I believe that if we have a daughter, she will need to have sexual relations with you as you are the head of the family. I will have to discuss this with her when she gets older, probably around the time she becomes a teenager. I wouldn’t talk to her about it when she’s very young, like seven, but around thirteen seems like the right age to have that conversation.
Lifetime cancelled Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up, Blanchard’s reality show, last August after it aired for two seasons.
The popular author, known for their bestselling books and charging over $100 for personalized videos on Cameo, also partners with brands like Bondi Sands Australia, e.l.f. Cosmetics, and Avia Leggings in sponsored posts.
Personally, Blanchard and her fiancé, Ken Urker, are delighted to be parents to their 14-month-old daughter, Aurora Raina Urker. They’ve been engaged for two years.
In March 2024, she secretly started seeing a 33-year-old bartender again, leading to the end of her 20-month marriage to Ryan Scott Anderson.
