Gwyneth Paltrow talks empty nest syndrome after her kids Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, left for college

Gwyneth Paltrow has been sharing how she’s adapting to having an empty nest now that her children have moved out.

Gwyneth Paltrow, the 53-year-old Academy Award-winning actress, has two children with her former husband, Chris Martin, 48: a 21-year-old daughter named Apple and a 19-year-old son named Moses.

Earlier this month she chatted with Demi Moore at a Q&A for her movie Marty Supreme.

After my children left for college, I felt a real loss of direction. Then, a man named Josh Safdie contacted me, and I realized how out of touch I was with current pop culture. I hadn’t even seen Timothée Chalamet in anything, which is honestly shocking – but I have now, she told People magazine.

Gwyneth Paltrow, who stepped back from acting to focus on raising her children and building her lifestyle company, Goop, explained that a combination of factors led to her return to the screen.

‘I realized I did such an insane number of films before I had my kids,’ she shared.

Gwyneth Paltrow remembers times when she starred in as many as five films each year. She admits she didn’t allow herself to slow down and carefully plan her career moves.

‘I was just on this train and going and going and when I had my daughter, I really wanted to stop.’

Oh my gosh, she actually said she took three whole years off! Can you believe it? She admitted she’d occasionally come back, but it was so she wouldn’t have to be away all the time, because she was raising her child all on her own. It just makes me love her even more knowing she balanced everything like that! It’s so relatable, and she’s just incredible.

In the film Marty Supreme, she portrays a former movie star. At a recent event, the actress shared her reasons for taking on the part.

‘I felt for Kay so much and her loss and her…I don’t know, there was something so tragic about her and sort of cold,’ she described. 

Paltrow explained that the character decided to return, mirroring her own experience of reversing a decision to step away.

Last year, photos of her and Timothée Chalamet, 29, kissing on the set of the movie ‘Marty Supreme’ quickly spread online, grabbing everyone’s attention.

She recently told Good Morning America that her friends had a big reaction when photos of her kissing someone in the park were published. She said the moms in her mommy group chats were all really excited about it.

In 2025, Apple, a student at Vanderbilt University, shared with Interview magazine that she is majoring in law, history, and society.

After launching her fashion campaign with Self Portrait last year, she shared that her parents instilled in her the importance of hard work.

She told The Daily Telegraph in October, ‘I know this is not a normal way to grow up by any means.

My parents taught me the importance of hard work and made sure I understood that nothing comes easily. They didn’t want me to feel like I deserved special treatment or handouts.

Apple is pursuing a career in both modeling and music. She recently released a song and music video with the band Jade Street in October.

Moses is also pursuing a career in music, just like his father, who is the well-known lead singer of Coldplay.

He is part of a three-piece band called Dancer and attends Brown University.
