Gwyneth Paltrow says her parents’ interfaith marriage was ‘scandalous’ in the 1970s
As someone who has grown up with the rich tapestry of interfaith traditions, I can wholeheartedly relate to Gwyneth Paltrow’s unique upbringing. Her story resonates deeply with me, as my own family, much like her Jewish-Christian union, was a blend of cultures that I cherished dearly.
In the 1960s, Gwyneth Paltrow mentioned that her parents’ decision to marry across different faiths was considered a ‘scandal’ by both of their families.
The 52-year-old influential figure in wellness is the daughter of Blythe Danner, known for her role in Meet The Parents, and the late filmmaker, Bruce Paltrow.
In 1969, Blythe, a Christian woman, and Bruce, a man raised Jewish, got married. They stayed together until Bruce passed away from cancer in 2002 at the age of 58.
From an early age, Gwyneth grew up observing holidays that reflected her dual heritage, and it seems she’s carried on this practice throughout her adult life.
Now, she’s shared insights about her multi-denominational childhood, discussing the festival of Hanukkah with Israeli advocate Noa Tishby in a video.
The actress from Shakespeare In Love mentioned that she spent her childhood in the 1970s, during which interfaith marriages were quite significant and noteworthy, as she puts it.
She disclosed that it was quite challenging for both sets of her grandparents due to their decision to marry one another, as it caused a slight scandal.
She admitted that no one found it pleasant, but over time, the affected families came to terms with it and have mostly moved past their initial discontent.
Simultaneously, Gwyneth felt incredibly blessed as she was raised amidst two distinct cultures and beliefs.
Gwyneth expressed a strong attraction towards her Jewish relatives throughout time, emphasizing that this connection persists. She also shared fond feelings about the customs, affection, boundless kindness, meals, lively conversations, and the family ties themselves.
She added: ‘I’m so close to everybody on that side of my family. We’re all kind of interwoven and so important to each other, and just showing up for each other.’
As a passionate admirer, I’d like to share that in my family history, traced back over seventeen generations, we discovered our roots lie with scholars of the faith – rabbis, originating from Poland and Belarus, bearing the name Paltrowicz.
Reflecting on her childhood, she recounted delightful tales of spending time with her grandparents in Long Island during Hanukkah and receiving Hanukkah gifts, which could be actual currency or chocolate coins.
Gwyneth, recalling her brother Jake’s bar mitzvah, said, “I remember those golden round coins so vividly, and it was just my brother and I, tearing them open with excitement.
Currently, she’s wedded to Brad Falchuk, a man with Jewish roots and a collaborator with Ryan Murphy on the shows “Glee” and “American Horror Story.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I proudly share my parenting journey with my daughter Apple, aged 20, and son Moses, 18, alongside my former spouse, the charismatic Chris Martin, lead vocalist of Coldplay. Raised within a devout Christian household, Chris and I have fostered an amicable co-parenting relationship that prioritizes the happiness and wellbeing of our children.
Not long after giving birth, Gwyneth revealed that she chose to name her son Moses as a tribute, in part, to her own father.
In an interview with Billy Bush on Access Hollywood, she mentioned that if their child (Apple) had been a boy instead of a girl, they had planned to name him Moses, as that was a name they had always liked.
I find Moses’ name truly remarkable. What makes it even more fascinating is that he was born on the most sacred day of the year, specifically the Sabbath preceding Passover, which falls on a Saturday.
She mentioned that he was born at Mount Sinai Hospital, located in New York City, and went on to clarify that Moses was actually the Hebrew name given to my ancestor. (Sources: People)
