Gwyneth Paltrow admits she didn’t call ambulance during ‘heart attack’ symptoms because forgot number

I was so shocked to hear about what happened to Gwyneth Paltrow! Apparently, she woke up in a London hotel thinking she was having a heart attack. The really scary part? She was completely panicked and couldn’t even remember what number to call for help. It just goes to show how even someone who seems to have it all together can freeze in a crisis.

It was a truly frightening experience, and it happened at a really difficult time for me. I was still deeply mourning the loss of my dad, Bruce Paltrow, who passed away in 2002. His death stayed with me for years, impacting both my personal life and the kinds of projects I chose to work on. It really changed things for me.

She told the Awards Chatter podcast that she felt utterly devastated by her grief, as if it were a life-threatening experience.

Oh my god, I remember one night so vividly. I woke up convinced I was having a heart attack while I was in London! It was terrifying. I was completely overwhelmed with sadness, and honestly, I almost called 911 out of pure panic. Thankfully, I somehow remembered at the last second that they use 999 over there, not 911 like back home. That little detail probably saved me a trip to the hospital, but the grief… it was just crushing me.

Gwyneth Paltrow made it through the frightening ordeal and, while still deeply saddened, channeled her emotions into playing the troubled poet Sylvia Plath in the 2003 movie Sylvia.

Sylvia really helped me through a difficult time. She gives me a way to deal with tough emotions and confront the parts of myself I don’t like, allowing me to express them, she said.

Honestly, getting out of bed each day became my lifeline. Just having somewhere to be, a routine… it was everything. I spent the whole day just… feeling everything, really digging into the sadness and letting it all pour out. And Sigur Rós… oh, Sigur Rós. I’d listen to them and just sob, letting all the pain flow out with the music. It sounds crazy, but it genuinely saved me, you know? It really did.

Shortly after her father passed away, Gwyneth Paltrow met Chris Martin of the band Coldplay. They eventually moved to the United Kingdom together.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have two children: Apple, who is 21, and Moses, 19. They divorced in 2014 after being married for ten years.

The actress famously announced her separation using the term ‘consciously uncoupling,’ which sparked a lot of discussion and debate, and reportedly led to her losing a part in a film.

Oh my god, you guys, she talked about it on Amy Poehler’s podcast! Apparently, right after everything with Chris – you know, the ‘conscious uncoupling’ – she was supposed to start a movie. I’ve listened to the podcast like five times already, and it’s just… heartbreaking to hear her talk about it like that. It’s like, she was trying to move on and throw herself into work, but it was clearly still so raw. I just live for these little details, honestly!

‘That was great because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired, that was so awesome.’

Gwyneth acknowledged that she could see why the phrase bothered some people, especially those who had gone through difficult divorces.

Imagine going through a difficult divorce yourself, or witnessing your parents go through one. Then, someone suggests there’s a better way to handle things. It naturally makes you wonder if you somehow caused harm. I realize this topic resonated with people on a deep, personal level.

That kind of strong reaction usually happens when something hits home – when people are genuinely hurt. It’s natural to say things you regret when you’re upset, to lash out in anger. It’s just part of being human.

Paltrow also opened up about a guilty pleasure she plans to revisit in the future: smoking.

Gwyneth Paltrow, known for her wellness brand Goop and promoting a healthy lifestyle, recently revealed she’s always enjoyed smoking cigarettes.

Chatting with Poehler, Paltrow revealed she’s already daydreaming about her next puff.

Poehler reminisced about cigarettes, saying, ‘We all know they’re terrible for your health, but it feels like they were part of a simpler era.’

‘You know, I decided when I’m like 87 I’m going to start smoking again,’ Paltrow admitted.

Oh my gosh, it’s just… remembering Amy Poehler talking about this is EVERYTHING! She brought up how back in the early 2000s, everyone was doing that thing, but then she specifically remembered me being the very first person she ever heard say the word ‘macrobiotic’! Can you believe it? It’s such a small detail, but it’s burned into my brain! It’s like, I started a trend! I’m obsessed with remembering that moment.

Gwyneth chuckled, recalling a time when her diet consisted of a strange mix – things like cigarettes alongside healthy foods such as tofu, brown rice, and seaweed.

Poehler added her own quip, comparing it to ‘cleaning your house while it’s on fire.’

Paltrow previously revealed she last smoked on the night of her wedding to Brad Falchuk in 2018.

She recalled the event with sadness, telling Vogue in October 2025, ‘It was our wedding night, seven years ago.’

She explained that while updating her documents, she purchased life insurance. The policy stated that if she had smoked at any point, even a single cigarette, the insurance would be invalid.

As someone who’s a classic Enneagram Type One – and honestly, for me, living with integrity is paramount – I made the decision to stop smoking and I’ve stuck with it. But I’ll be real, sometimes I do miss it!
