Gwendoline Christie fondly remembers Brienne of Tarth, who "fed me for all of those years"

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the fantastical worlds of television and film, I can wholeheartedly say that Gwendoline Christie’s portrayal of Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones was nothing short of extraordinary. Her unwavering dedication to her character and genuine admiration for the writing and creators behind the series truly shone through each episode, making her journey as Brienne one that I eagerly anticipated with every new season.

Gwendoline Christie gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, and she continues to hold a deep affection for this well-loved character. As she recently shared with Radio Times, “I was fortunate to play a character I adored so deeply, one that was filled with such depth and offered endless opportunities for discovery.” She expressed her admiration for the writing by George RR Martin, praised the showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss for their exceptional adaptation, calling it ‘remarkable’.’

Christie’s authenticity consistently radiated through the screen during her role on ‘Game of Thrones’, a factor that greatly contributed to the captivating nature of her character arc as Brienne. Unsurprisingly, it seems she didn’t give much thought to the show’s immense popularity while it was airing, as she was wholly engrossed in her character, being deeply invested in its development.

The character fed me for all of those years. The character never once stopped feeding me, and I never stopped working on the character right to the very end, even with things that people were surprised by, like when Brienne smiled when she was knighted. That made complete sense to me that she hadn’t really smiled. This is the time she smiled, because she got the thing she wanted in a very intimate and special way.

Among Brienne’s standout moments, the instance where Jaime Lannister knights her ranks as one of the most memorable, arguably the finest from the entire final season. When Brienne flashes a smile, it’s more than just a gesture; it holds genuine warmth and sincerity.

Gwendoline Christie has “every confidence” that George R.R. Martin will finish The Winds of Winter

There’s a purity to Brienne you sense in Christie as well. She even throws in some words of support for author George R.R. Martin, who’s been writing the sixth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter, for well over a decade at this point. “I have every confidence that he will [finish it], Christie said. “I hope so. I have great love for George, and he’s been very good to me over the years. He’s wonderful.”

The jury is still out on Winds, but Christie has been killing it in a number of high-profile roles since the end of Game of Thrones, including spots in shows like Wednesday and The Sandman, not to mention playing Captain Phasma in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. She’s about to appear in a new movie called Robin and the Hoods, about a group of kids who are trying to stop a developer from tearing down their forest getaway. Watch for her appearance as “the witch” (or a woman who lives in the forest whom the imaginative kids perceive as a witch) around the one-minute mark in the trailer below:

Robin and the Hoods isn’t an exact replica of another medieval saga, but it’s close enough that I can understand why they considered Christie as a suitable choice. Given her past work, she’s quite adept at handling this type of material, and she’s one of the best in the business.
