Gustavo Dudamel, L.A. Phil and Gabriela Ortiz earn Grammy nominations for 'Revolución Diamantina'

As a lifelong music enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of orchestral performances, I can confidently say that this year’s Grammy nominations have truly outdone themselves! The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the brilliant leadership of Gustavo Dudamel, has once again proven its unparalleled prowess in contemporary classical music.

On Friday, recordings by Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic earned six nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards. Specifically, they received a nomination in the orchestral performance category for their work on Gabriela Ortiz’s “Revolución Diamantina.

orthiz’s debut full-length orchestral album received numerous recognitions, among them a contemporary classical composition honor, which was presented to the composer himself. Additionally, the L.A. Phil recording of Ortiz’s work was nominated for engineered classical album, classical producer of the year (credited to Dmitriy Lipay), and classical compilation categories.

The opera “Girls of the Golden West,” composed by John Adams and performed by the L.A. Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, received nominations for Best Opera Recording and Engineered Album in the classical category. Additionally, it was included as part of Lipay’s nomination for Classical Producer of the Year.

In the category of orchestral performances, Dudamel and the L.A. Phil are competing with Marin Alsop and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra for the piece “City Noir,” which was specifically commissioned for Dudamel’s first gala by the L.A. Phil. Other nominees in this category include conductor JoAnn Falletta, who is well-known for her role as music director of the Long Beach Symphony and is nominated with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, the L.A. Phil’s former guest conductor Susanna Mälkki has been nominated for conducting the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Lastly, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony are also in this category.

For their performance of “Eastman: The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” in the instrumental solo category, ensemble Wild Up, based in Los Angeles, received nominations for both soloist Seth Parker Woods and conductor Christopher Rountree.

2026 marks the year when Dudamel plans to depart for the New York Philharmonic. Already boasting five Grammy Awards, he added another one to his collection last year, in recognition of an exceptional performance with the orchestra of “Adès: Dante.

A victory for Dudamel at the 67th Grammy Awards would mark his sixth win out of seven nominations. Previous wins include the choral performance category for “Mahler: Symphony No. 8, ‘Symphony of a Thousand’” at the 64th Grammys and the orchestral performance category for “Ives: Complete Symphonies” at the 63rd Grammys. He earned his first Grammy statuette in the orchestral performance category for “Brahms: Symphony No. 4” at the 54th Grammy Awards.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the 67th Grammy Awards are set to unfold right before our eyes on February 2! The grand event will be held at the iconic Crypto.com Arena, nestled in the heart of downtown L.A. Don’t worry if you can’t make it there; you can catch all the excitement live on CBS and Paramount+!
