It turns out that although the series is primarily recognized for its mecha, it also boasts an array of renowned human pilots for these mobile suits. Interestingly, a recent Japanese poll asked fans to select their favorite villain from the Gundam franchise, and the chosen one might not come as a shock.
This analysis focused on the top antagonists from various installments of the Gundam series, encompassing both famous and less-known adversaries. Notably, characters like Char Aznable and Laure Le Creuset were included, but so were others that might be considered obscure. However, it was clear who reigned supreme in this competition, as the character in question is currently the most popular human within the franchise’s expansive universe.
Japan Votes Char Aznable Most Attractive Gundam Villain of Them All
A recent poll focused on the attractiveness of villains within the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Characters were ranked based on their good looks, with some being “bishonen” or conventionally attractive males, and others sporting distinctive masks or helmets. Surprisingly, Zechs Merquise, also known as Milliardo Peacecraft, only managed to secure the 9th spot in a tie. Despite his ties to popular Mobile Suit Gundam series, the character didn’t gain as much traction in the West as expected. Characters from the Universal Century timeline dominated the rankings, but Rau Le Creuset, the villain from the Cosmic Era’s timeline, took the 3rd spot. The older and more physically imposing Ramba Ral ranked second, providing a sharp contrast to the other winners.
In the realm of Gundam fandom, it was none other than Char Aznable who claimed victory in the title of “most alluring Gundam villain,” a title that echoed through the halls of polling stations due to the sheer number of votes cast. Known as the arch-nemesis of any Gundam anime protagonist, he stood as an unshakable adversary to Amuro Ray, the classic hero of the series.
A recurring figure in the Universal Century timeline, Char Aznable is renowned for his complex moralities, once adopting a heroic persona under the name Quattro Bajeena. Nicknamed the “Red Comet,” he’s famous for piloting the fiery-hued Zaku II mobile suit, and his exceptional skills have made him a formidable rival to Amuro Ray and the RX-78-2.
The physical attributes of this iconic villain can be seen in various other Gundam antagonists across different continuities. This is evident in their shared helmets/masks and blond hair, yet despite being easily imitated, Char has never been replicated. Interestingly enough, a previous poll saw Amuro Ray crowned as the top hero, creating a balanced rivalry both on the battlefield and in the hearts of fans.
