Gundam Seed Deactivates Its Mecha With New Real Grade Gunpla Model Kit Release

Starting in the early 2000s, a particular series created what is likely the most popular alternate storyline in the entire mecha franchise. Now, four model kits based on key designs from that anime, known as the Cosmic Era, are being re-released.

I’ve noticed that Bandai is releasing four classic Gundam model kits again, plus a brand new one. What’s really cool is that they’re all designed to look like the Gundams after they’ve been ‘depowered’ in the anime – meaning they have a more subdued color scheme that really makes the intricate details and weapons stand out. If you’re a fan, you can pre-order them now to complete your collection with these unique versions.

Bandai Powers Down With New Gundam SEED ‘Deactive Mode’ Gunpla Release

The Deactive mode Gundam model kits are inspired by a feature from the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny anime series. In those shows, many mobile suits have special armor that can temporarily shield them from damage. However, using this armor drains a lot of power, and when the power runs out, the suits enter a ‘Deactive’ state, indicated by a dulling of their color.

Even with their subdued colors, the latest model kits from Bandai are still remarkably detailed. These ‘Real Grade’ kits strike a balance – they’re a manageable size, but include the intricate features usually found in larger ‘Master Grade’ models.

The RG 1/144 ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam Deactive Mode model kit showcases the anime’s primary mobile suit, complete with a Beam Rifle and shield. As the hero’s Gundam, its design echoes those of iconic predecessors like the RX-78-2 Gundam and the Wing Gundam.

The Justice Gundam (ZGMF-X09A) features the same weapons as before, plus a unique backpack that can transform into a separate hovercraft with its own blasters. It also includes a Beam dagger and a longer Beam Saber. The Destiny Gundam (1/144 scale) is quite similar to the Freedom Gundam, but it has a different shield and comes with its own Beam Saber.

The 1/144 scale Strike Gundam model, in its inactive mode, has a sleek design because it doesn’t include wings or a backpack. Optional armor pieces are available, designed to be used with weapons like the Beam Rifle. These are re-releases of older models, each costing approximately $20, and they offer color schemes that are true to the original mobile suit designs.

The newest addition to the line is the RG 1/144 Force Impulse Gundam in Deactive Mode, a completely new model kit. It comes with a winged backpack, beam rifle, shield, and daggers, matching the style of the other low-power Real Grade kits. It’s priced around US$22, a little higher than the others. You can pre-order now from the official Premium Bandai website. The Strike and Freedom Gundam kits will ship in May, the re-releases in June, and the Force Impulse in July.

First released in 2002, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED was essentially a fresh take on the original Gundam anime series. Since then, it has grown into a larger franchise, and the newest addition is the 2024 anime film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
