Guess who? Aussie ‘rock & roll royalty’ looks unrecognisable during rare TV appearance
As an ardent fan of Australian rock music, I can confidently say that Steve Balbi is a living legend! His journey through the music industry since the 80s, working with giants like David Bowie and Jon Stevens, has been nothing short of inspiring.
He is Australian rock royalty and one of the founding members of a legendary Aussie pub band.
As a die-hard fanatic, I’ve been breathlessly tracking the career of this legendary Sydney-bred artist for decades now, ever since they first burst onto the music scene back in the 80s. From sharing stages with iconic legends like David Bowie to collaborating with the inimitable Jon Stevens, their journey through the industry has been nothing short of extraordinary.
The energetic musician, known for his fervor, has built a strong image due to his unstoppable vitality on stage, even as he nears his 60th birthday.
Indeed, it is Steve Balbi, a renowned Australian bass guitarist, best known for his work with Noiseworks, that graced their most popular songs such as “Take Me Back” and “No Lies.”
On Wednesday morning, Steve graced the screens of Channel Nine’s Today Extra, leaving co-hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys in awe due to his remarkable transformation.
In the spirit of embracing change and staying fashion-forward, I’ve bid adieu to the iconic mullet and clean-shaven look that defined my style in the 80s. Now, I’m all about the windswept, jet-black tresses and a chic goatee – a fresh new look that reflects the modern times.
However, he still sported the same cheeky grin that he did during his younger days.
The lively entertainer shared with the show’s hosts his enthusiasm for the forthcoming launch of his single album, titled “Breakdown,” as well as his Sydney tour.

Steve expressed his enthusiasm by saying, “I really enjoy sharing stories and being straightforward. I adore this activity just as an eight-year-old cherishes a favorite toy; I can hardly wait to dive back into it again, and I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity.”
‘I try to dress like a rockstar and act like a human being.’
Steve will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday.
1986 marked the breakthrough for Steve as a member of the iconic Australian rock group Noiseworks, led by Jon Stevens. Their chart-topping songs included Take Me Back, No Lies, and Touch.
The band broke up in 1992 and later regrouped in 2016.
Balbi remains a part of the band to this day.
He has also had success with his musical side projects Electric Hippies and Mi-Sex.
