Grotesquerie recap, episode 7: A very twisted sister
As a long-time fan of suspenseful dramas, I must say that this week’s episode of Grotesquerie took me for a wild ride! If you were hoping for some answers, well, they’re still out there somewhere, hidden beneath layers of mind-bending twists.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EPISODE 7 OF GROTESQUERIE
In this week’s installment of “Grotesquerie”, if you were expecting clarity or answers, I regretfully inform you that none are provided. Instead, episode 7 takes an unexpected turn, leaving the series on its head. With only one episode airing tonight, it seems intentional to give viewers a full week to ponder and grasp exactly what they’ve just experienced.
In the previous week’s installment, Lois discovered herself in an old, deserted bottle factory, learning that her stalker had been lurking all along. As she scrutinized pictures of herself adorning a wall, he crept up from behind, attempting to harm her. However, Lois reacted swiftly and managed to shoot him before he inflicted any injury. The episode concluded mysteriously, with Lois revealing the identity of her stalker off-screen, leaving viewers in suspense about who was concealed beneath the mask.
Who are the killer(s)?
This past week felt like it zoomed by. I’ve just closed a major case that’ll go down as my career’s biggest win. Turns out, it was old man Charlie who pulled the trigger. He’s gone now. The weight of that case finally lifted, I can’t help but feel a sense of triumph. With a newfound sense of freedom, I decided to take Marshall off life support. It’s time for us both to start anew.
In this episode, there’s an uncanny feeling of being detached from reality. Lois encounters the phrase “wake up” and stumbles upon a document detailing a woman on life support, whose organs are unsuitable for transplant. This foreshadows the upcoming revelation, which takes place roughly halfway through the episode. However, before that bombshell drops, Lois persists with her inquiry to wrap things up neatly. In the church, she discovers Megan’s office, where she finds a large book filled with gruesome images and unsettling diagrams. The room is adorned with pages from the Bible and verses.
That evening, Lois prepares dinner for Megan at her residence and shares her recent hypothesis. Here’s the thing: The books found in Megan’s office are a match to those uncovered in Charlie’s home. This suggests that Megan has been working with Charlie, a fact she doesn’t appreciate Lois discovering. Their conversation escalates into a fierce, physical altercation ending with Megan repeatedly stabbing Lois.
Just kidding, nothing is real
In this scenario, we take a complete turn of events. A world where Marshall is no longer asleep, Merritt and Eddie have spent several years as a married couple on the brink of divorce, Father Charlie turns out to be Doctor Charlie instead, Megan holds the position of police chief, and Nurse Redd switches roles to become a cam girl whom Marshall has been involved with for six long years.
In essence, it’s crucial to note that Lois is currently in a coma, and hints throughout have suggested this as reality. Given the events of this episode and previews for the next three, it seems plausible that the world we’ve seen up until now has been primarily within Lois’ consciousness. This implies that everything that has transpired could be a manifestation of her thoughts.
Over dinner with Merritt and Eddie, a situation reminiscent of the beginning unfolds as Merritt discloses that Lois and Eddie have been in a two-year relationship. This revelation pushes Marshall over the edge, much like how Lois’s affair with Nurse Redd was the last straw for her in an alternate world. In response, Marshall hastily drives to the hospital with the intention of turning off Lois’s life support and even informs the doctor that he doesn’t wish to keep her body. Instead, he suggests they donate her organs for scientific research.
Eventually, Marshall appears to be quite insensitive and harsh about the situation. In fact, Redd points out his hypocrisy, given that he himself has been unfaithful to his wife for years, but only now finds fault when she does the same thing.
The peak of the strange and unsettling events unfolds as a nerve-wracking series, switching between scenes where Doctor Charlie is preparing to disconnect Lois from life support and those where Lois battles for survival alongside Sister Megan. Ultimately, in one reality, Lois fatally shoots the nun, whereas in another, she regains consciousness.
It seems we’ll primarily focus on Lois in the real world for now, but there’s still a chance the show could surprise us with another plot twist at the last moment. The previews suggest that Lois may have inadvertently brought a killer from her dreams into the real world. However, it’s tough to predict where the story will go next. Fortunately, we get two episodes next week!
New episodes of Grotesquerie air Wednesday nights on FX and also stream on Hulu.
