Grotesquerie episodes 3 and 4 recap: Enter Travis Kelce

As a dedicated fan of gripping television shows that delve into the darker recesses of human nature, I must admit that Grotesquerie has become my latest obsession. The intricate plotlines and the exceptional performances by the cast have me hooked, and I find myself eagerly awaiting each new episode.

As a captivated gamer tuning into my screen tonight, I found myself engrossed in episodes 4 and 5 of Grotesquerie on FX. The plot twists in this peculiar series are getting more tangled than ever, giving off the eerie vibe of American Horror Story’s season 13. What truly piqued my interest was the arrival of Travis Kelce, stepping into the role of a hospital orderly named Eddie, making his grand entrance in episode 3.

Episode 3 opens as Meritt is filming an audition tape for a reality show at home, with Lois occasionally offering unsolicited guidance. Later, Lois decides to do something thoughtful for Meritt and agrees to prepare a turducken for her. She proposes that in return, Meritt will work towards achieving the desired weight and will refrain from commenting on her mother’s drinking habits.

In this special moment between mother and daughter, Meritt prompts Lois to share memories of how she first encountered her father. As we delve into the past through flashbacks, we discover that Lois crossed paths with Marshall when she was a waitress. Fast forwarding to the present, Lois acknowledges that love can be harsh and though there aren’t always daily feelings of love for Meritt, her desire for her remains unwavering.

At the break of the following morning, Lois, still reeling from her drunkenness and hangover, receives a chilling phone call about the next victim of the killer. This time, he’s constructed a haunting assemblage using various body parts and crowned it with a black goat’s head. The grotesque display is fastened to a central pole within what seems to be a recreational facility, filled with loud music, scattered balloons, and an unrelenting strobe light.

In a situation where none of the other officers could identify the deceased, Lois launched into a passionate speech, lamenting their apparent indifference towards important matters. Each victim was either a transient or someone they had previously apprehended, individuals whom Lois personally knew. Later within the precinct, Lois enlists Megan to ponder the potential motive of the murderer. The latest casualties were sex workers, suggesting that this individual harbors deep-seated contempt for sexual activity and views it as vile. After Lois departed, fellow detectives voiced their disapproval of her apparent inebriation, but Detective Hanover (Brooke Smith) defended her, asserting that she was the only one among them capable of solving this case.

In the house of worship, I find myself standing before Father Charles, who addresses some of my fellow religious figures about a particular piece, penned by Megan – a work that has stirred quite a bit of apprehension among us due to its potentially provocative nature. However, Father Charles posits an intriguing viewpoint: this very sensationalism could be beneficial. It provokes fear and, in turn, propels people towards the sanctuary’s doors. If anything, he encourages us to delve deeper into such stories, to expose more gritty details – not out of prurient interest but as a means to draw more souls into our spiritual fold.

In addition, there’s a secondary storyline unfolding between Charles and Megan as they find themselves drawn to each other, with undercurrents of sexual attraction. Megan hands over her most recent article, this time focusing on a shocking crime scene, only to find Charles at the location, fresh out of the shower in nothing but a towel. They almost give in to their desires, but Charles refrains, for now.

In a new encounter at the hospital, Lois pays a visit to Marshall, who’s dealing with an unusual situation yet again, this time involving a significant bed sore. The nurse, Nurse Redd, appeals to Lois for assistance in cleaning and caring for Marshall to prevent the onset of sepsis. Later, Redd requests that Lois grant her power of attorney. If Lois declines, Redd implies she could expose secrets and cause trouble for Lois. Despite this implication, Lois remains firm in her decision to say no.

Afterward, Lois encounters Eddie, portrayed by Kelce, who becomes quite fond of her. There’s an immediate spark between them, and it seems like there might be some flirting involved. Eddie recognizes that Lois is intoxicated and doesn’t want her to drive, so he kindly offers to drive her instead. Lois declines his offer, and just moments later, she gets into an accident, finding herself back in the hospital, this time in her own bed. Hanover appears and informs Lois that she has been arrested, but Lois is confident that she can resolve the situation since she believes only she can crack the case.

In a simple and conversational manner: Lois persuades Eddie to free her from her restraints on the bed and assist her in making a quiet exit. He complies, and she leaps into his vehicle, enabling them to slip away together under the cover of darkness.

Episode 4 recap

In the previous episode, I left the hospital, but lo and behold, there I was back at the start of this one, visiting Marshall. Lois mentioned she’d be taking a break from our meetings for a while, focusing on her case instead. Nurse Redd overheard our chat and secretly recorded it, hoping to use the conversation as ammunition to gain power of attorney.

At church, Father Charles engages in an additional income activity by creating workout videos on his stationary bike. Megan presents him with a new article, but he’s not keen on this one as it lacks the intensity he desires. It’s simply a report about the police hitting a roadblock and no fresh leads. Charles prefers articles that stir fear and violence. Once more, they find themselves in his private quarters, and this time, they consummate their relationship.

Once more finding himself at the hospital, Eddie proposes something akin to a date with Lois. In essence, however, he’s inviting her to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. There, he confides in her about his past as a skier who suffered a grave injury that not only ended his career but also led him into a self-destructive path involving alcohol and prostitution. He cautions Lois against losing the dignity he believes he once forfeited.

Shifting the conversation back to the church, Megan takes Lois along as they visit Father Charles in the confessional. It appears they both share a belief that perhaps God has forsaken them all. They seem to suggest that something ominous, harsh, and demonic seems to be present.

Upon returning home, Lois finds a delightful surprise from her daughter who’s managed to unravel the tricky puzzle box discovered at a previous crime scene. Inside, there’s a tiny note containing coordinates. Lois summons Eddie over to the house to watch Meritt for a while since Lois and Megan are heading off to the location specified by these coordinates.

Upon my arrival, I stumble upon an enormous blazing bonfire pit. Suddenly, Dr. Joseph Ritter appears, explaining that this place has been hit hard by recent earthquakes, causing a massive sinkhole to open up over an unknown natural gas reserve. “Could it be that the gates of Hades have finally given way?” I can’t help but wonder.

Due to the fire blocking the road, Megan and Lois decide to head back to the valley and stay at a hotel instead. They make a pit stop for gas, where Lois encounters an odd man digging a trench for a firebreak in the rear. He begins talking about how humans have caused all these disasters due to climate change, implying it’s already too late to flee. He warns Lois to stay on the road since the only way to escape the fire is by passing through it. As a precaution, he hands her a silver fire shelter for safekeeping.

Megan and Lois resume their journey, and Megan feels compelled to reveal her past indiscretion with Father Charles. She believes that the recent events, including the firepit incident, are a consequence of her actions and those like hers. Labeled as an adulterer and sinner, she’s unable to continue the conversation when Lois shows surprise. Suddenly, they slam on the brakes as a woman drenched in blood dashes towards them and hops into the backseat. She demands they drive quickly, stating that “someone” is pursuing them, and when asked for clarification, she only replies, “Him.
