Grotesquerie episode 3 recap: Lois is nowhere closer to the truth

As a seasoned fan of thrilling mystery series, I must say that the latest installment of Grotesquerie has me hooked like a fish on a line! The intricate plot twists and the dynamic duo of Detective Lois Tryon and Sister Megan are a refreshing take on the crime genre.

During the premiere of FX’s show Grotesquerie last week, we encountered Detective Lois Tryon. This week, the investigation into a string of murders in a small town continues. The horror series is co-created by Ryan Murphy, Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken. Det. Tryon teams up with an unconventional partner, Sister Megan – a nun journalist with a passion for solving crimes. These two women are both resourceful and intelligent, but can they solve the murders before it’s too late? Let’s hope so!

This week’s episode begins by showing Merritt preparing an audition tape, with her mother offering assistance. However, Lois dozes off and thinks she spots a figure moving around their home. In the meantime, Lois persists with heavy drinking while cooking a turducken dinner for her daughter. But there’s a catch – Lois sets a condition that Merrit stops bringing up her drinking habits if she wants Lois’ help in achieving her goal weight. Both women acknowledge their shared weaknesses and decide to abstain from criticizing each other about them.

Lois and Merritt bond in their unique way

Lois and Merritt savor their meal while discussing Marshall, prompting Lois to confess some fond memories of him. Intrigued, Merritt persuades her mother to recount the tale of how they met. As the narrative unfolds, we are transported back in time to the beginning of their relationship, from their initial date to Marshall encouraging Lois to become a detective and beyond. This triggers Merritt to ask if her mom loves her, to which Lois replies that she does on most days, and on the others, she strives to. In response, Merritt advises her mother to cut down on alcohol consumption, prompting Lois to retort by suggesting Merritt should control her eating habits instead.

I stir from a chilling dream, where I unwittingly discharge a weapon within my own sanctuary, only to be roused by the incessant ringing of my phone. Upon answering, I learn that another soul has met an untimely end. My shaky steps lead me to the crime scene, still reeling from the effects of alcohol. I take a surreptitious swig from my flask before exiting my vehicle.

More murders

In the heat of the moment, I found myself addressing Officer Jack, asserting my certainty about the identity of the deceased. By noticing a distinctive tattoo on one body part and following various other leads, I managed to confirm their identities for my team. I was dismayed when I was asked to step aside, but provided clear instructions that were heeded. Later, I apologized to Jack for my hostile demeanor, only to retract that apology moments later.

In a turn of events, Lois extends an invitation to Sister Megan to attend a gathering at the local police station. The collective aim is to unravel similarities in the string of murders. Sister Megan shares her hypotheses and insights, yet her fellow investigators appear somewhat skeptical. Lois proposes that the perpetrator could be a professional with extensive knowledge of human anatomy, such as a surgeon or coroner. She also elaborates on her belief that she is being singled out due to her dedication towards serving the homeless community.

After Lois and Sister Megan depart, we find ourselves engaging in a heartfelt discussion about Lois’ struggles with alcoholism and some of our reservations regarding Sister Megan. Yet, one of the detectives interjects, bringing up the fact that Lois’ husband is currently hospitalized and could use our unwavering support. He also makes it a point to remind us of Lois’ impressive track record in cracking cases, emphasizing the respect she rightfully deserves. As a gamer, I found myself reflecting on these insights, acknowledging the complexities that surround both Lois and Sister Megan.

Father Charlie encounters church members suggesting he temporarily halt the publication of his newspaper, but he firmly resists. With the data speaking for itself, this point alone strengthens his argument. To him, it’s imperative that the church adapts to contemporary times if it hopes to remain significant and impactful.

Father Charlie and Sister Megan’s strange relationship

Next, we find Sister Megan engrossed in writing an article. Later, she consults Father Charlie, who seems to be sauntering around the church yet again in a sheer robe and chaps without back pockets. Sister Megan seeks Father Charlie’s opinions on her ideas and needs his blessing to publish something potentially contentious. She goes on to recount her findings from the latest homicides to him. Father Charlie asks for a printed copy to review thoroughly, praising her efforts and telling her she’s doing well.

Sister Megan seeks out Father Charlie and finds him bare-chested and in a bath towel inside his room. After reading an article, he praises Sister Megan, causing her to wonder why he needed to read it personally. They then share a private moment, with Sister Megan gently massaging Father Charlie’s scarred back using a towel and moving quite close to him. The situation quickly becomes passionate before Father Charlie halts their interaction.

At the conclusion of the episode, Lois heads to the hospital where she witnesses Nurse Redd attending to a troubling infection on Marshall. The nurse addresses Lois about her alcoholism, causing her to become emotional and weep. Subsequently, they move to the dining hall, and Nurse Redd expresses her desire to be Marshall’s legal representative (power of attorney), stating she cares for him more deeply than Lois does. Before signing any documents, Lois departs.

Lois spends time outside at the hospital where she encounters an attendant named Eddie (portrayed by Travis Kelce). They quickly establish a rapport, exchanging pleasantries and even displaying a touch of flirtation as Lois sips from her hip flask. As she prepares to depart, Eddie cautions her against driving in her current state, but she disregards his advice and departs nonetheless. On the road, Lois loses control of her vehicle, colliding with a street pole. Upon regaining consciousness within the hospital, a teammate informs her that she’s been detained for driving under the influence. Determined to dismiss the charges, she can continue working on the case.

Eddie reappears and provides Lois with a meal, despite her fellow detective chiding her about her actions. On her own, Lois persuades Eddie to assist her in leaving the hospital. Something seems off about Eddie; isn’t it just me, or does he appear ghostly? Could he be a spirit, perhaps even Lois’ guardian angel? I can’t tell for certain yet, but I’m curious to see how things unfold further.
