2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Star Wars enthusiasts, as it marks the return of a Star Wars film to the big screen in quite some time. The duo of The Mandalorian and Grogu from Disney+ will make their theater debut, leaving fans wondering about the movie’s content but also pondering over one intriguing question: what will the popcorn bucket design be like?
It seems that while the question at hand may not be top priority, given the surge in popularity of popcorn buckets in cinemas lately and the trend for each major film release to have one, it’s highly likely that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” will follow suit. In an interview with Collider, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni mentioned they haven’t made a decision yet. Nevertheless, I suspect they already have, as Filoni seems to have a brilliant concept in mind, as he suggested…
It’s got to be Grogu, right? Sitting there with popcorn in front of him, and the bucket’s the pram.
It’d be fantastic if the designers behind the Mandalorian and Grogu popcorn bucket are taking note, as I can hardly think of a better concept! The anti-gravity pram of Grogu is one of the most memorable aspects of the Disney+ series. Combine that with the fact that Grogu consuming or drinking anything usually goes viral, and a popcorn bucket pram featuring Grogu would be truly spectacular.

A large number of novelty popcorn containers are uninspiring, either being standard buckets with an appealing image or having a design that makes consuming and cleaning up the popcorn challenging. Creating a container that is visually striking, easily identifiable as a movie reference, functional for use, and aesthetically pleasing when displayed on a shelf is surprisingly hard to accomplish.
As a cinephile, this concept truly ticks all the right boxes. The only hitch I could foresee that might prevent an idea like this from greenlighting is the lack of clarity regarding whether the pram featured is indeed seen in the movie itself. In our last encounter with Grogu, he seemed to have exchanged his floating cradle for piloting the droid IG-88. It’s plausible that merchandising teams would be more keen on endorsing something directly related to the latest film.
Given that Dave Filoni not only contributes to the script of the upcoming Star Wars film, but also holds the position of Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, he could potentially exert significant influence over the project. If a unique popcorn bucket for this movie is designed and it catches my interest, I might consider purchasing it despite my minimal history with theater popcorn buckets and limited collection from Disneyland.
